Hemp Crop Has Several Drawbacks; None Is Expected to Be Serious
THERE ARE SEVERAL INTERESTING side-lights on this hemp crop the government wants grown in the Midwest It is reported that the food packing companies are somewhat worried about it. They fear that farmers will grow hemp at the expense of food crops such as tomatoes
next year.
and corn. The hemp crop will take
"the reason Indiana is growing only 20,000 acres of it instead of the 82,000 originally planned. The U. S. employment service made a quick survey of labor supply in the area where hemp will be grown. such as the big Aluminum Co. plant at Lafayette and others had drained away so much labor that growing 32,000 acres
would be too much. Some other objections may come from religious groups because hemp #8 a narcotic, in addition to providing Tope fiber. Another possible difficulty is that at a certain stage in its growth, hemp has an uynpleasant odor. T h e county agent in Shelby county came out publicly urging farmers there to grow hemp, but his enthusiasm is somewhat mis-
Mr. Budrow pjlacad because
8helby county is too fai away from ‘where the hemp mills 17ill be built,
which is in the northisestern part of the state. It is likely that the government will ask the farmers grow less wheat and soybeans rext year in order to leave room fcr hemp. We have millions of bush:ls of wheat in storage now and th s year’s soybean crop was a humd nger, desipte the early freeze. . One trouble with heinp, from the farmers’ standpoint, is that it is hard on the soil and has no byproducts. But the government expects to overcome these objections by guaranteeing a good price to
‘make it worthwhile to the farmer.

It found that war plants
boosted stock of Northern Indiana Public Service Co. several dollars this week. . . . “Danger period” for our tire supply will be between the fall of 1943 and summer of '44 when synthetic rubber will be coming out in sizable proportions, says Rubber Chief Jeffers. . . . Eastern railroads now claim that congestion at eastern- ports has been cleared up; perhaps it was that big convoy to Africa that did it.

STOCK MARKET QUIET, NARROW
Traders Exercise Caution
As Steel Reports Show Possible Dip.
~NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (U. P).— Demand for low-priced issues, par-
ticularly communication and mining shares, featured an otherwise quiet and narrowly moving stock list today. : Most pivotal shares held near yesterday’s final levels, with. gains slightly outnumbering losses. However, a number of less prominent issues reached new 1942 highs in active turnover. Bonds and commodities moved i regularly. Cotton held about steady and grains were firm under lead of rye, which was up almost a cent a bushel. There was nothing in the day's business news to influence the market and traders apparently: were disposed to operate cautiously. ports from leading steel centers indicated operations may record another small dip next week. Strength and activity in International Telephone domestic and foreign issues featured stock trading.
