PRESIDENT URGES SILENCE ON DEC. T

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (U. P.)— The White House announced yester-

day that President Roosevelt felt|'

that Dec. 7, anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pc¢arl Harbor, “should be observed as a day of silence in remembrance of a great infamy.” > Mr. Roosevelt, the White House said, “will hot deliver an address

on Dec. 7 nor take offic.al notice of that anniversary.” Mr. Roosevelt was asked at his press conference today about plans for observing the end of the first year of war for the United States. He had nothing to say then, but he conferred later with Elmer Davis, director of the office of war information. Shortly afterward the White House issued this statement: “The president will not deliver an address on Déc. 7 nor take official nétice of the anniversary. The president does not feel that this attitude on the part of the government need interfere with the carrying out of programs already arranged under private auspices. But insofar as notice of Dec. .7 by the president is concerned, he feels that it should be observed as a day of silence in the remembrance of a great infamy.”

YEARS AGO on the college circuit, the appearance of Miss Hutton and her ensemble was enough to start a riot. She used to make one-night stands at theaters in the college towns. I guess maybe she still does. Anyway, the youths would be lined up for blocks and the usher who opened the doors for the first show had to zig out of the way quick, or be trampled. When the seats were filled up, the boys would stand in the aisles. Of course, the town fire marshal would come around to clear the aisles, but the boys would throw him out. Her outfit was one of the greatest fire hazards in the business in those days. That was years ago. Her organization today is practically all new. It features a new vocalist, Stuart Foster, who sings “My Devotion” and “White Christmas” in a baritone as rich as double chocolate and as gooey. Also. a trumpet player by the name of Roger. Didn't catch his Jast name. He plays “And the Angels Sing” swaying on his feet with eyes closed, cheeks puffed and beads of perspiration on his brow. Plays pretty good, too, and loud. ” Sings Opera THE STRAIGHT band numbers are not so interesting, but the novelties are not bad, particularly those which call forth some ensemble work at which the boys are hot. There are 10 Harmonica Rascals, all variously attired in a wild and colorful assortment of rags. Their outstanding work is their own arrangement of “The American Patrol.” The soloists, including one Negro comic, are excellent. One of their stunts is to have the best dressed member, attined in overalls, sing “Pagliaci” while his conferes pull off a series of stunts aside on the stage. They specialize in ragamuffin roughhouse, sometimes a little humorous. mostly a little dull. Wee Bonnie comes out and sighs the, following numbers in the following order: “Neck of a Chicken,” “He’s My Guy;” “I Met Him on Monday,” “Walk With Billy,” “My Resistance Is Low” and “Oh, Johnny.” I can report that the final “Oh” in “Oh Johnny” is not the long “oh” it used to be, but a

Terrify Neighbars.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (U. P.). —J. H. Kerr's neighbors looked iorward happily today to casual walks from the streetcar line free of adventurous meetings with meandering animals. Kerr who "supplies animals to Hollywood studios, must move them farther out in the country under a ruling of Judge Frank R. Carrell. In testimony punctuated by coyote howls, the mating cry of a crow, the cry of a cougar, eerie howl of: a timber wolf—all expert imitations — the neighbors told what it meant to live so close to Kerr. “I went into the ladies’ powder room at an auto court, Mrs. J. As she reached for the faucet she saw a bear standing on his haunches and peering in the window over the sink, ogling her. Likewise screaming, she ran into the next room and shouted to her husband: “There's a bear looking in the window.” “You're crazy,’ ” he said.

Says Ape Is Harmless

Kerr imitated the sounds of his animals to show they really weren't so unpleasant. But Mrs. Ethel G. Jeffers disagreed and described the call of a bird which “had a shriek like a woman being assaulted.” Kerr maintained none of his animals, including an ape and a cougar, was dangerous, “Mr. Kerr is wise in the ways of animals,” Judge Carrell said. “But I'm afraid he doesn't quite understand people.”

ANSWER FILED TO WAYNE PUMP SUIT

FT. WAYNE, Ind, Nov. 21 (U. P.)—Officials of S. F. Bowser & Co., Ft. Wayne, said today that the company had flled an, answer to the $713,700 patent suit instituted against it by the Wayne Pump Co., also of Ft. Wayne. Bowser & Co. charged that the Wayne Co. had. violated the federal anti-trust law, and claimed $1,500,000 damages. j In filing its suit, the Wayne Co. committed nearly 5,000 specific vi-| olations of a license agreement in-| volving a computer pump patent! held by Wayne. | Bowser & Co. denied violating the agreement, which specified that the Wayne Cec. retained the right to set the price and other sales terms on the computer pump. The answer asserted also that the agreement required Wayne to meet the same conditions as were im-! posed on licensees, but that the! licensing company “surreptiously” gave more favorable terms to certain customers. Other charges were that Wayne gave secret rebates to favored customers and that it “used” the Gasoline Pump Manufacturers association to aid its actions in alleged restraint of trade.

THE PICTURE THAT TELLS the life story of one of the greatest of American baseball players—“Pride of the Yankees’—will come to two of the neighborhood theaters next week at advanced prices. It is an earnest effort on the part of actor Gary Cooper, producer Sam Goldwyn and director Sam Wood to make a picture about Lou

Gehrig, superior films. Gary Cooper and a 22-year-old actress, Teresa Wright, who came into stardom just this year, turn in admirable performances as the great first baseman of the New York Yankees and his wife, Eleanor Gehrig. Their expert acting and the directing genius of Mr. Wood make the scenes so real that you can almost feel the excitement of the baseball fans in the stands. The cast has several of baseball’ss “big names” who played with Gehrig. They include Babe Ruth, Bob Meusel, Bill Dickey and Mark Koenig and not a one of them even comes close to striking out in their respective roles. Walter Brennan: is-cast as a sports, writer, Elsa Janssen is Mom Gehrig and Ludwig Stossel is Pop Gehrig. The smooth voice of Bill Stern adds to the realism and naturalness of the film. The story covers Gehrig's life from the time he was a boy of 11 and Christy Mathewson was the hero of the day. It ends with the great, but sad, Lou Gehrig celebration in Yankee stadium following the tragic retirement of the “iron man” from the game. The picture will be at the Zaring for a week beginning Wednesday and matinees will be held Thanksgiving day, Saturday and Nov. 29. A short subject, “Pvt. Smith of the U. S. A.” is added to the bill. The Granada will show the film for five days, beginning next Saturday, Nov. 28. Two short subjects, “The Battle of Midway” and a film showing the football thrills of 1941 in slow motion are included on the Granada bill.
