ordinance was published as required by law. He said individual notices to the residents are not required. The annexation will more than double the property taxes for resi-
dents in that area and they don't]
like it. One resident, Carl E. Kett, insurance salesman, 5316 Primrose ave., summed it up concisely: “We're pretty mad and there's going to be plenty. of fireworks. We got railroaded, and I mean railroaded,” he said.
‘A Last Ditch Fight’
Cliff Campbell, a sales manager living at,5271 Primrose ave. said: “I've been pretty busy running around trying to get some facts on
our predicament. “Things are shaping up pretty well and we're going to fight this to the last ditch. It’s all arranged for a neighborhood meeting at 2 p. m. Sunday. “We had a big battle about this same thing a year and a half ago. But we knew it was coming then and smashed it. Besides, at that time, the plan was to take in from 52d to 59th sts. and from Keystone ave. to the Monon railroad tracks. “I think that if they had come and talked it over, that we would be sensible enough to consider the
ASK FEDERAL JOBS FOR HANDICAPPED
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (U. PJ). —Thousands of jobs in arsenals, navy yards and other government industrial ‘establishments can be filled by persons with physical defects, and women can be used in “practically all types of work,” the civil service commission reported today after la nation-wide survey of federal jobs. 7 “Unnecessary and artificial restrictions on the employment of physically handicapped are unreasonable, especially in wartime when there is a critical lack of physically fit manpower in many occupational fields,” the commission reported. “Placement of physically handicapped can be effected with a mini-
mum lack of efficiency and mini-|
mum industrial risk.” The commission listed more than 1300 positions that can be filled by workers with amputated legs or feet, heart diseases, vision and hearing defects and arrested or healed cases of tuberculosis.

“I think this is a terrible time to be annexed to the city,” said Mrs. Engleman. “My husband is in 1-A and will be called to the army very soon. What with the house I don’t see how I'll ever be able to meet the ‘increased taxes.” “Not only that,”. put in Mrs. Toombs, “but if we come into the

“Most of us in this neighborhood are young couples with no children or just one child. Now, with everything higher, our homes to pay for, and little ones to take care of, I don’t see how lots of us are going to swing it. We paid for every bi of it.” And another woman added: “The mayor is supposed to have said we have paved streets. I'd just like to have him drive his car over our wonderful paved streets. Paved with gravel and chuckholes, he should say.”
