IN THE YEAR 1690, Jonathan Wooley, as straight-laced a Puritan @s ever was an ancestor, denounced a witch and her pappy who was a

} Sorcerer.

Both were burned according. to the quaint custom of the

period and buried beneath an oak tree whose roots were to keep their

gpirits confined.

In reprisal and with malice aforethought, the witch laid a curse

upon Wooley (Frederick March) and the descendants of Wooley - (Frederick March), to witch: Said descendants were doomed ‘to - marry the wrong women, which they invariably did, to their eternal misery. There was a Wooley in the Revolution who joined up to get away from his shrewish wife and another Wooley in 1861 who answered Lincoln's call for much the Same reason.

Coming down to the present, we find the last of the Wooleys running for governor and about to marry, in unwitting obedience

to the ancient curse, a shrew (Susan Hayward). She is the daughter of the publisher whose newspapers are backing our candidate and making his election a lead pipe cinch. 8 8 8 COMES THEN a thunderstorm which strikes the tree in which the witch and her sorcerer father are imprisoned. Out come the smoky spirits of ‘the pair who proceed to become Veronica Lake and Cecil Kellaway, their ancient grudge against the Wooleys still intact. Wraithing through the New England countryside, the smoky hex artists wind up in a bottle of champagne and 7-Up respectively outside the country club where our hero and shrew are dancing the light fantastic in honor of their coming nuptials. Witch Lake identifies the last of the Wooleys and resolves to make him suffer by having him fall in love with her in human

I form.

‘What goes on from here is one of the wildest and most delightful fantasies since “Topper” started on the screen. It's “I Married a Witch,” which opened at Loew's yesterday, another literary fling of Thorne Smith. Sorcerer Kellaway winds up in jail on a drunk charge, after his spirit leaves its refuge, a bottle of Scotch. He can't get out of jail because he can’t remember the right words. Miss Lake swings the election for Candidate Wooley, 2,000,000 votes to nothing, by witchcraft— probably the only explanation for the turn of the political tide last Nov. 3 the political experts didn’t think of.

‘Gentleman Jim'

THE EPIC of “Gentleman” Jim Corbett, the dandy of the ring half a century ago, has been turned into a good screen story, well stocked with an adequate cast. “Gentlerian Jim,” with Errol Flynn as the great boxer, opened yesterday at the Indiana. Flynn represents Corbett as an ambitious, aggressive and devil-may-care dandy who enters the

ring to impress Alexis Smith as Victoria Ware.

How closely the film follows the life of Corbett is a matter for the sports authorities- to take up. However, the story you get is replete with anecdotes of the development of the fight game which are downright interesting. The filmplay places Corbett as the brightest and most gifted son of a warmhearted Irish family with a zest for battle. The Corbett brothers settle their differences in the barn every other reel and the cry, “The Corbetts are at it again,” which brings the neighbors running to watch a good fight, is the picture’s running gag. The film story has Corbett crash San Francisco's exclusive Olympic club where he quickly becomes a prize pest, having himself paged and playing juvenile jokes. To squelch him, the members arrange a match between the club bore and Jack Burke, a visiting English champion. Corbett knocks the champ’s block off and his career begins. The fight between Corbett and Joe Choynski in San Francisco bay is impressively staged—and impressively broken up by the police after the enthusiastic fans have thrown the sheriff into the water. . Finally, Corbett meets the great John L. Sullivan‘ and the film

© perpetrates the legend that Anna

Held lent him the money to meet the appearance guarantee. The scene where Sullivan hands the victorious Corbett the championship belt is the moving climax. There is a fine, old legend here. Warners have treated it pretty

| well.

MUNITIONS IN SCRAP PROVE ONLY RELICS

NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (U. P.).— All the exciternent created by the finding of seven big shells and a 250-pound bomb under a scrap metal heap was over today. The munitions were just where they should have been. They were relics from the British exhibit at the world fair, and had dummy fuses, loaded with sand or oil.

Must Purchase More Than "Million to Meet Goal

War bond sales reports released by the Marion county war savings staff today show the county lagging

by $1,100,000 in the campaign to meet its $5,869,690 November quota.

monthly goal, been $2,700,077. “The county is failing again, failing to meet a war assignment, the most important assignment the home front is called on to perform,” said ‘James F. Frenzel, Marion county administrator of the war Sayings staff. “Indianapolis and the county cannot make this November quota if every bond investor in the territory doesn’t buy at least one extra bond for the month. We must do this. We can’t let down. We can’t break faith with the navy and the marines in the Solomons and the army battling in North Africa.”

Chairmen Meet Today

Meanwhile, all payroll chairmen of the war savings staff and executive chairmen of central Indiana counties were called to a meeting today at the Claypool hotel to hear outlined plans for the “Top Ten Per Cent by New Years” drive. In the drive contest, which will result in awarding of plaques to wining counties, Marion county will compete in the top population bracket with Allen, Lake, St. Joseph and Vanderburg. Scoring in the

contest will be based on total num-

ber of firms in each of the counties as against the number of concerns attaining 10 per cent of over-all
