AY, NOV. 19,
A Collection
1942
of Maps May Be Fitted
Into a Novel Decorating Scheme
ah ARE YOU A MAP SAVER? Today, with interest in the war thef ~ aters paramount, many homemakers are saving the day-to-day maps
*, published in newspapers and magazines as a record of world affairs, or Zo follow the course of action of their own kin in the service.
Have you
thought of turning this collection hobby into a decorative note for the ~ +. duration?
DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a . boy of 18 and I'm in love with a _.8irl of 16. She says she loves me but she has accepted an engage-
- ment ring from a man of 31. I “tried to tell her that she ought to get a boy nearer her age, but
she doesn’t think so. Her parents
do not know how old he is but
have heard her talk about him.
She wants me tc come and see
her but since she has the ring
I cannot feel toward her as I
would like to. She says she loves
the man she is engaged to but
loves. me too. So please write and tell us what we .should do. MR. X,
Answer—The girl is too young to know what she wants. She is having a dandy time dangling two men on the string, The older man makes her feél' important and . grown up but still she likes the company of a boy her own age. She is not seriously: enough in love with either to make a final “choice; so she will keep both as long as possible. « Your cue is to duck out of the “~triangle and find yourself another girl. It is none of your business ‘whether she married a boy too old for her or not. But it is your business whether you bother with an engaged girl or not. You, too, are much too young to be seriously in love. You need more experience before you settle down to one girl.
~ Go out and get it.
: 8 8 =» . DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am 17
years old and have been going with a very nice boy for about eight months. We like each other quite In fact we have talked of marriage some. He will be going fo the army or navy soon and he wants
well.
me to take an engagement ring before he leaves.
I would like to take it, but I know motkar doesn’t want me to from some of the remarks she has I do not plan to marry for
made. three years and I told him that, but he wants me to take the ring as a promise not to go with anyone else. Do you think I should take the ring and then take the consequences? UNDECIDED.
Answer—Wouldn’t it be wiser for you to wait until the boy comes back to take the ring? After all you only have gone with him eight months and you don’t know what effect separation will have on your feeling
for each other.
A
Of course it would be thrilling to have a ring and that is what you're thinking of, but a ring is no guarantee that the two of you will remain in love. A more mature attitude is to be willing to subject your relationship to whatever tests come to it while the boy is in the armed forces. JANE JORDAN.
Put your problems in a letter to Jane Jordan who will answer your questions in this column daily. :

Perhaps you have two or three maps of particular interest to you— one of the world and one or two of more detailed special areas. Why not mount them directly on the wall of your living room or study and frame them with a neat wallpaper border or the new easy-to-apply trim edging? If you are repapering your walls, keep your hobby in mind and select a style that will display your maps most effectively. You will not want a pronounced pattern of course, as that would detract from the clearness of the maps. You will want, rather, a background paper of untized + stripes, small designs or plain all-over color. To give the room special interest, you might combine two papers in the same room. Select one of the many small-patterned conventional designs that will harmonize with your rug, draperies and furniture, and paper three of your walls with this style. Then use a complementary plain or delicately striped wallpaper on your fourth wall as a dramatic setting for your maps. » ” ”
Picture Backgrounds
YOU MAY FOLLOW this same principle of backgrounds for the hanging of pictures, too. In order to give full effectiveness to the pictures, hang them against a simple, quiet ground paper. If you must have pattern, keep it small and inconspicuous, and surround your pictures with large enough maps or frames to separate them from the background. When you are using mirrors as decorative wall ornaments, however, you may have all the pattern you want, as mirrors create no conflict in color or design with their background. 8 2 8

Protect Delicate Headboards
The vogue for beds with quilted or tufted headboards becomes increasingly popular. Some of the loveliest are upholstered in soft, delicate shades of silks, brocades, satins. The problem then is to keep them free from dust and soil. To protect headboards and still enjoy their beauty, make well-fitting covers of transparent film. Film can be purchased by the yard, cut to slip snugly over headboard and be bound at seams with ordinary binding tape. Covers should be shaped so. that they fit smoothly, yet are easy to slip on and off.
Plan Fall Wardrobe Around Three Colors
A girl can save herself a lot of grief by planning her wardrobe in advance, building it around a framework, so to speak, and ending up with a well co-ordinated group of clothes suitable for every need.
That’s what the Powers girls dol
each season, and everybody knows
they can’t afford any closet-clut-|
terers in their profession. Most of them build their basic wardrobe evound a smart three-color combination.

Woman’s Viewpoint— ‘Women’s Vote Was Evident
In Election’
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Times Special Writer THE POLITICAL COMMENTATORS have analyzed the recent election results with their usual expertness. Yet only a few attributed the upset to the power of the women’s vote, although they had ‘previously called attention to its importance. Considering them as a group, women have been sympathetic to New Deal philosophies. In the main we are idealists, and most of the reforms set up under Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt had our whole-hearted approval because we could clearly see the need for many of them,
Besides, the feminine half of the!
population is blessed or cursed— however you feel about it—with the Eleanor Urge—the drive to go about doing good. Helping somebody gives us a feeling of importance, and while we may not yearn to be Lady Bountifuls, in the exact sense of the term, we are natural-born reformers. The woman who can’t manage to get out and uplift somebody is almost sure to work it out on her family. To a far greater extent than men, we have the evangelical complex, 2 ” 2 BUT—we also have an instinctive hatred for waste. And the new dealers lost millions of feminine votes because of the careless way they have tossed money around. Our sense of thrift has been repeatedly outraged by open evidences of wanton improvidence in public business. Even those women who have been recipients .of new deal favors— those, at least, with whom I have talked—are uncomfortable about the extravagance they meet. Being new in the political world, the housewifely instincts will die hard within us, and you can be sure, even as many .defeated new dealers are now sure, these instincts are not all dead yet. When women hear politicians call upon them for sacrifices, and when they realize that part of those sacrifices will be the lives of their husbands and sons, they aren’t going
.| to take kindly to slip-shod methods
of running government business, nor stand by complacently while the wealth they have helped to create is used to build federal bureaus. The housewives of America spoke in the 1942 elections, They have said they want the administration to practice some of the thrift and the sacrifices it has been demanding of them. .If the administration is smart it will listen!
