WELLES SEES ALLIED MORALE IMPROVED
NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (U. P.).—
The successful allied offensive in North Africa has dispelled some of the doubt and lack of self-con-fidence engendered in the people of the united nations by early reverses, Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles declared last night.
Mr. Welles warned, however, in
an address before the New York Herald-Tribune hopes for an early victory and said he foresaw “dark days, reverses .and 1 |ereat sacrifices yet to be under-

SEPLANE WING
|Had Perilous Trip After
Rescue From Liferaft; Wants to Finish Job.
—Capt. Edward V. Rickenbacker, who has cheated death on land, sea and air, rode 40 miles on the wing
and two companions from a rubber raft in the Pacific ocean.
The first details of the amazing rescue were revealed today by the war department. The seaplane that spotted the men, who had been floating on the raft for three weeks, was so small that only one of the men could be taken in the cockpit. Capt. Rickenbacker and one of his companions were lashed to the wing while the plane taxied over ocean swells to its base, 40 miles away.
Despite the effects of floating for three weeks under the hot Pacific sun, Capt. Rickenbacker is determined to complete the mission that was interrupted when his bomber ran out of fuel Oct. 21 and was forced into the sea. He will be hospitalized for two weeks.
Landed by’ Flares The war department's brief an-
observation scouting plane with a two-man crew sighted the raft at dusk at the end ‘of another day of searching. . The pilot started to land, but darkness already had fallen. He dropped flares, and by their light put the tiny craft down beside the raft,
The pilot was Lieut. W. F. Eadie of Evanston, Ill, accompanied by aviation radioman L. H. Boutte of Abbeville, La. With Capt. Rickenbacker on the raft were Col. Hans C. Adamson, Washington, and Pvt. John Bartek, Freehold, N. J. Col Adamson was: crowded into the plane’s small cockpit and Capt. Rickenbacker and Pvt. Bartek were lashed to the wings before the plane started the sea journey to its undisclosed base.
Given Up for Dead
Capt. Rickenbacker and his seven crew members disappeared Oct. 21 while on a secret mission for Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson. A radio station on an island south of Aahu picked up a message from his plane - saying that but one hour’s fuel was left. That was the last word. They had been all but given up for dead when the news was flashed Saturday that Capt. Rickenbacker and six of his men were safe.
The seventh, Sergt. Alexander Kaczmarcyzk of Torrington, Conn., died from exposure on the raft and was buried at se. Three others, Lieut. James C. Whitaker, Burlinghame, Cal.; Lieut. John De Angelis, Nesquehoning, Pa., and Staff Sergt. James W. Reynolds, Ft. Jones, Cal, were found on an island. Capt. William T. Cherry Jr., of Abilene, Tex., pilot of the bomber, was found ' floating alone on a raft and his rescue last Friday led to the discovery of the others.
