Thousands Have Been

of Manufacturers in Britain ‘Concentrated’ in War Work

Br ECONOMY GOES UNDER THE KNIFE again. That's the word from James ¥. Byrnes, economic

stabilization director,

and WPB Chief Donald Nelson agrees

& will have to be done to release strategic materials and man-

power for war work.

Goods must be simplified, standardized and production

confined to a few nucleus plants. following Britain’ s example in so many lines,

Britain has done in this line i Manufacture of stoves, typewriters and bicycles was concentrated and rained in this country several months ago. Farm machinery | “was put on the list just recently. In Britain the hosiery industry voluntarily con-

centrated its ma nufa cturing, ‘released 37,000 out of 95,000 workers and now only 416 out of 1500 factories make hosiery. Me. Budrow Those 416 firms are agents for the closed firms and sell hosiery under their brand names too. Sixty lace BaGiaciurs transferred their préduciion to only one factory and went to making camouflage net, mosquito tents and “curtain materials for shatter-proof-ing glass. | Even food fuarirtastumers have been affected. Of 16,000 packing companies only 800 are working]; now. Banks and insurance companies have lost more than 40,000 workers and expect to lose 15,000 more. Branch banks are closing, night shifts are being started. In‘surance Sompanies will cut sales staffs. Retail stores | have. been hit by draft, reduced stocks, mergers ‘and thus no concentration plan hasbeen used on them yet. But big city stores may be closed in some cases ‘to avoid large air raid losses and cut travel. Their stocks would be dispersed in small outlying stores. ” ” ”

CRACKDOWN on “heatlandlords is forthcoming. OPA | has had many complaints from ‘Indianapolis tenants that their apartments . are not getting the legal amount of heat, that landlords are holding back some of their fuel oil

- supplies. 8 | 8 ”

money” like the Nazis did in invaded countries. When Treasury Secretary Morgenthau was in London he arranged to pledge certain U. S. assets in return for having francs waiting (in Britain's African banks) for U. S. landing forces. It's just another one of the thousands of details that were planned for the successful campaign to win the friendship of the French North Africans. ® =» » ODDS AND ENDS: Libby-Owens-Ford Glass’ Co. doesn’t like the word “substitute” applied to glass, calls it an “alternate” for war-scarce materials, , . . Because of the gasoline needs of American forces in North Africa, supplies are dwindling in the east, necessitating

. . . Treasury may come out with those plastic pennies, wooden nickels and maybe a 2%z-cent piece next year. Price ceilings have local turkey dealers confused on price they should pay for the Thanksgiving bird. . . . Inland Steel Co. will “plow in” its No. 6 blast furnace at Indiana Harbor, Ind.,, Monday, the first new one to be put in operation 5 this area since the war began. . . . One machine tool manufacturer "has put out a list of “don’ts” to keep green workers from breaking his products.
