Make Him Feel at Home Cut Absenteeism, Says Personnel Expert.
By Science Service \ PITTSBURGH, Nov. 13.—The way to reduce absenteeism is to make the worker feel that he bes longs and is important because of his work to the organization em= ploying him, W. H. Kushnick, di= rector of civilian personnel training for the war department, declared at the Industrial Hygiene Founda~ tion meeting here. a Most absences from wosk are ef
short duration, one, two or three days, and are sometimes charged to illness. They should be charged to maladjustmens, Mr. Kushnick stated. wi The worker often does not know why he prefers something else to going to work, and if he did know probably would not tell. Psycholo= gists know, Mr. Kushnick contine ued, that the reason is because th@ worker is not getting satisfactiog out of his life, of which his job if a part. 2 Shows Resentment
If he'is a round peg in a square hole, if he has to work at night and thus misses recreation with his friends and family, if he has to.
work, or if his working or living environment are crowded, dirty or unsanitary, he will be dissatisfied and is likely to show his resentment by staying away from work. Overcrowded washrooms at the end of a hard day when the force is washing up to go home may be the last straw that decides the worker then and there not to go
“The most important single factor
faction in his work is his relation to the first-line supervisor,” Mr. Kushnick declared.
Supervisor Plays Part *
“The first-line supervisor is the only part of ‘up-the-line’ authority with which the worker has real
visor is the personal representative of ‘The Company’ to the employees and all that that word signifies. It is he who must answer to the problems of the workers. Further, ° he is the one who gives commendation for work well done, who is in the best position to influence the sentiments and attitudes of his em- = ployees. bo, “The war department is engaged
program from which we expect to reap the harvest of greater morale.” The size of the pay envelope is far from the major demand th worker makes of his job. In Mr. Kushnick said on this pe some workers today are taking fifi es off because they are earning more - money than ever before and prefer the leisure of frequent holidays to the satisfaction of additional wants they have not habitually acquired,
