UBLE MOVIES

lett Asks Industry to Halt Practice As Aid In War Effort. -

NEW YO, Nov. 13 (U. P)— Flimination of double features in . motion picture theaters for the duration of the war was urged today Lowell Mellett, chief of the bureau of motion pictures, OWI. ~ Speaking at the 19th annual cone ference of the national board of review of motion pictures, Mellett urged theaters to devote a part of

their program to factual films that would give people “the feel of the war and their own relation to it.” ~%The habit of sitting three or our or even more hours,” he said, “with one’s mind afloat in a fictional world, hardly equips the American population for the serious

job of dealing with real life. That|:

‘way lies degeneration rather than growth. And we must grow. We ‘must grow into a people competent to win this war.” In the early days of this war, Mellett said, Hollywood did not seem to realize “what it means for a great democracy to commit itself to war.”

Raps Current Films

“We got a stream of pictures that had no more relation to reality than ghe newspaper comic strips,” MelJett said, “pictures that were caleulated to confirm our naive notion ¢hat all Germans are either super ples, masters of scientific warfare » Hitler-heiling blockheads, that all Japanese are buck toothed ‘saboteurs in horn rimmed glasses, and that any American war correspondent, given the aid of a good looking blond, is able to handle the | entire situation, leaving the rest of us little to do but sit in the theaters three or four hours a day and cheer. ¢ “Unfortunately, this war isn't ~ gimple and anything that is done to encourage people to think it Is, is a very great disservice to the country.” The government, through its own fnovie productions and by advising Hollywood, hopes to bring the real “meaning of the war to theater audiences, Mellett said. May Be a Long War

“This may be a long war” he pontinued. “If so, the wear and ~ tear on the emotions of the people ~ Will be severe. We believe that the motion pictures can sustain national ~ morale in two ways: one, by pro- ~ widing the relaxation of entertain- | ment, and two, by aiding in a basic understanding of why we are fight- ~ ing and the things we are fighting ¥. The motion picture screen, he Migaid, is an important instrument in bringing to the people a ‘clear, un--gonfused understanding.” | The board of review immediately | endorsed Mellett's views with a resolution urging theater owners to ~ suspend double feature showings for | the duration “as a saving of time, ~ eritical materials and man power needed for winning the war.”
