Freedman in a recent article in the Journal of American Medical Association, many hospitals now continually have occupancy rates of 100 per cent or. more. “Single rooms are made fo hold two or even three patients, maternity patients are kept only three days after the child is born, operating rooms are used continuously 24 hours a .day and patients are even cared for in hallways, with no immediate relief ‘in sight.”

Facilities Still Inadequate

Gubin said within the last 10 years over $500,000,000 has. been spent on hospital projects: by the federal works . agency and others, but despite an increase of over 100,000 beds, the facilities remain inadequate. “The picture for future hospital construction is a dark one, but so is the picture for all other construction,” he said. “Hospitals are now fifth in priority” but in many cases fail to get sufficient materials to complete construction. The net result, Gubin said, will be that many communities needing hospitals will be unable to build them, even with their own funds, until the war is over. In some cases, however, small units will be constructed to relieve desperate shortages.
