Only on arrival at a port town did I learn I was assigned to a transport carrying a battalion destined to be a spearhead of the landings on the Algerian coast. There had been whispers in London which caused me to equip myself with heavy woolen clothing. But I hadn’t been aboard ship long before I realized we were going south, not north. I lived on the ship as part of the battalion. As I sit on my steel helmet with my typewriter on a chair, in a cabin, writing this dispatch, the voice of the colonel is coming over the loud speaker in a final talk to his command. “In just a few hours we are going over the side of the ship and it is a record run,” he said. He warned the men to respect native customs, be friendly to people and “not to shoot unless the situation demands it.” Then, in benediction: “Go out and do your job like soldiers and God bless you.”
