3 Key Games On State Card

‘Michigan at Notre Dame. Kansas State at Indiana. Purdue at Michigan State. Wabash at DePauw. St. Josepirs a at Butler. Indiana State at Ball State. Earlham at Hanover. River Forest at Vaipural Principia at Rose Poly (Friday).

By UNITED PRESS The ‘Indiana ‘college conference title, now sought by three. unbeaten leaders locked in a 1.000 average tie, probably will be decided

Saturday in three key games—sSt. Joseph’s at Butler, Wabash at De-

State. Meanwhile, Notre Dame offers the top home contest, seeking its sixth straight victory against

_|Michigan in a sell-out battle at

South Bend. The surprise I.” U. strength which knocked off the touted Minnesota eleven last week takes on Kansas State at Bloomington while Purdue invades Michigan State at East Lansing. Heading a nine-game state card that has been depleted by cancella{tions and short wartime schedules, Wabash, Ball State and defending champion St. Joe all fight to protect perfect loop scores against powerful opponents. With conference triumphs over Rose Poly, Pranklin, Butler and Earlham, the Wabash Little Giants face a make-or-break contest against an improved DePauw team that can leave Wabash all or part of the title, or knock them out of their chance at the championship. Major Stop-Gap A long-standing rivalry will make the game all the tougher for Wabash as DePauw makes a bid for the traditional Monon Bell, a 400pound brass symbol of gridiron superiority which has remained with Wabash since 1939. "Another rivalry tilt will be the Indiana State-Ball State battle when the Ball State eleven risks its four-game winning streak. The Cardinals have triumphs over Franklin, Central Normal, Manchester and Valparaiso. St. Joe’s Pumas have two huge barriers to hurdle before regaining their crown—Butler and Valpo. The Butler Bulldogs offer the major stop-gap to St. Joe’s path after reviving a winning form in the last two weeks. Earlham meets Hanover in a loop contest, and River Forest plays Valpo and Principia invades Rose Poly in intersectional tilts. Franklin completed its slate last week, and cancellations wiped out the remaining contests of Central Normal, Evansville and Manchester.

DePauw Clamors

For Monon Bell

Times Special GREENCASTLE; Nov. 10.—De‘Pauw university’s Tigers begin intensive drills today for their Dads’ day clash Saturday with the Cavemen of Wabash college in the 49th renewal of the oldest continuous football rivalry west of the Alleghenies. "Anxious to avenge last year’s 27-to-19 defeat and bring the coveted Monon bell, symbol of athletic su‘premacy between the two schools; back to the DePauw campus, the Tigers will be spurred on by the additional opportunity of knocking Wabash out of a tie for the Indiana conference crown. For the first time this year the Tigers will go on the field at game time with a weight advantage, outweighing the starting lineup of the Little Giants five pounds per man. DePauw university has won 20 victories over the Cavemen since the rivalry between the two schools started in 1890, while dropping 25 contests. Three tie contests complete the 52-year record. In the past 10 years each squad has won four and tied twice.

State AAU Honors Billy Hillenbrand

The Indiana Association of the A. A. U. tcday announced the nomination of Billy Hillenbrand, Indiana university football star, as candidate for the James E. Sullivan memorial trophy for sportsmanship. Hillenbrand'’s selection as a Hoosier candidate, the announcement said, was based more on his personal traits than-on his colorful athletic career. The annual award is made to the athlete “who, by his performance, example and influence as an amateur and as a man, has done the most during the past year to advance the cause of sportsmanship.” Final selection will be made from dozens of nominees. from all over the United States. Since the institution of the Sullivan Memorial trophy in 1930, two Indiana athletes have been honored.

Dorazio Rematched With Thompson

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 10 (U. P.). —Gus Dorazio, Philadelphia heavyweight, and Turkey Thompson, hard-hitting Californian, have been rematched for a 10-round fight at the arena, Nov. 17, Promoter Herman Taylor announced today. The two heavyweights met at Oakland, Cal, last Oct. 7 and Thompson stopped Dorazio in two rounds. The Philadelphian claimed, however, that he was the victim of a fast count.

Phillips Punches

Out Decision ok

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 10 (U. P.). —Ellis Phillips, colored Philadelphia lightweight, punched out a 10-round decision over Petey Scalzo, former featherweight champion from New York, before 9000 fans at the Arena last night. Lulu Costantino, 128%, featherweight contender from New York's East side, handed Frankie Carto, 127%, Philadelphia, a 10-round boxing lesson to win the semi-final. Costantino was unbeaten in 56 consecutive bouts until he was stopped by featherweight champion Chalky Wright recently. * The victory was Phillips’ second over Scalzo in two months.
