We, the Women—. Is Your Hubby A ‘Civilian ’ Grouch’ P

WIVES are complaining that hus-

live with, The wives say such husbands are grouchy, discontented, and are too restless to enjoy their homes.

The wives would like to know if| | there is anything

they can do to make matters better.

The answer to that depends, of course, on why the husband isn’t in the army if he wants to be. * If it is because his- wife (who is really capable of

lh : self) : Ruth Millett “It you < loved me you wouldn't want to © leave me” line on him—then she * can, of course, get herself a job and send him on his way. If she ““ ‘is determined to keep him with her as long as Uncle Sam will let her, she ought to be willing to put up with his symptoms of restlessness. If the husband is sticking by his family because he feels he has too many dependents to go volunteering for army service, about all the

has pulled

wife can do is try to make his home|

life as pleasant as possible, and “encourage him to do defense work in his spare time—or better yet try to get into an essential job. f J » 2 IF SHE HAS a frank talk with him and says, “I know you would like to be in, and I know that the only reason you haven't gone in is because of me and the children. But since you are with us—and since it may not be for long, let’s try to have as happy a home-life as we can,” it will probably make him try harder to curb his restlessness and discontent. If a man isn’t in the army because he was turned down for physical reasons, a wife’s job may be even more difficult. It will require more tdct, and more under-

* standing. But here again the best|

solution is to try to get the man into a job he knows is essential, if he isn’t in one already. That will help to make him feel he is playing a real part in the war effort. The worst thing a woman can do. in any of those circumstances is take the man’s dissatisfaction with his lite as a personal insult. A man’s wanting to be in the fight at this point is no sign he doesn’t love his wife and his home. Instead, it is a pretty good bet he thinks enough of both to want to help end the war so that he .can settle down to a secure, peaceful life and enjoy what he has. :

Keeping warm in a fuel-ra-tioned home is a problem solved by this brown satin slacks, coat and blouse outfit being featured in a fabric fashion ' show at Block’s. The satin is quilted on Aralac. DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a young man who has been deeply in love for the last three years. I feel more than safe in saying that the girl feels the same way. Both of us want to get married. I have a good job and make good money. I have a deferment from the draft until January and am sure’ Our wedding is planned for March when I will be 21, We want to be married right away but my mother will not agree to it. I have not lived with my mother for some time and therefore cannot see why we shouldn't go ahead, as the girl’s parents have given their consent. : My girl really wants to but she is afraid that my mother will have the marriage annulled. Should we wait until March or get married without my mother’s knowledge? R. G.

Answer—If your mother is very vindictive she may try to have your marriage annulled, but if you can produce a good reason why you married against her wishes, her efforts will not be successful. After all there isn’t much point in annulling a marriage for five months. The most sensible thing for your mother to do is to give her consent since her refusal will accomplish nothing. You have money enough to support your wife. You are not dependent upon your mother in any way. You do not even live at home. You're not rushing into a marriage with a girl whom you do not know. The most dignified thing to do is to wait until there is no legal question involved. But, as I said before, if thére is a good reason why

_|you should marry now instead of

later, your mother will not get very far with her interference.

» 2 ” DEAR JANE JORDAN—TI met a boy some years ago and we went together for some time before we quit. Then I met another boy and married him within a short time, but I can’t forget the first boy. I love him and I do not love my husband. I believe my husband loves me but don’t think it is doing him right to live with him when I don’t love him. He is good to me and makes me a. good living. I don’t know whether to leave him and get a job or stay with him. We have no children and I know this first boy loves me. I like to keep house and have a home but I want the one I love. BLUE EYES.

Answer—What makes you think the first man still-loves you? After all he stopped going with you and let you marry another man without trying to stop the proceedings. Where was his love then? Somethow I feel that your statement is

Health— Isolate Child In Whooping Cough Case

‘By JANE STAFFORD Science Service - Writer

from other people for two reasons: To protect other children from the sickness; to protect the “whoopers” themselves from getting some. other

“catching” disease, especially pneu-

monia. This is particularly. important in the case: of young children and babies, in whom whooping cough complicated by pneumonia is a most serious and often fatal disease. " Whooping cough is. most. infec= tious or catching in the stage before the typical cough starts, when the child seems only to have a .cold with a cough that may be considered bronchitis. : Consequently all the others in the home likely to be exposed to it befo y quarantine measures are started. In spite of this, the child with whooping cough should be kept away from the rest of the family as much as possible, especially those who have colds. 2 8 8

DOCTORS usually advise that children with whooping cough should be outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine as much as possible. Cold air makes a child cough more easily, however, so do not take him out on very cold days and do not

have bedroom windows open so wide that the room gets cold at night. Foods such as nuts, crackers, toast or zweiback, very hot and very cold foods (ice cream and hot soup, for example) and highly seasoned foods are likely to start a coughing spell, so should be avoided. The doctor will probably order that babies and very small children with whooping cough be kept in bed. Mother should pick baby up when he coughs, to reduce the danger of his inhaling mucus, and to reassure and comfort him. Older children can be taught and encouraged to" control the coughing so as to avoid severe paroxysms and vomiting. Because of the vomiting, it is important to watch the diet of the baby or small child so that he does not become undernourished. The doctor should be consulted about this. The coughing spells usually come two to three hours apart. If mother feeds baby after he has quieted down from one of these, instedd of waiting an hour for the regular meal time, there is a good chance his meal will be digested before the next coughing spell.

Window Fixtures Eliminate Rods For really smart-looking windows, consider the ingenious new fixtures that obviate the necessity of oldfashioned rods. The new ‘arrangement is simply a grooved wood moulding which is attached to the window frame. Tapes with metal tabs which fit into the moulding grooves are sewed onto the op hems of the curtains. To hang, just slip the wétal tabs into the grooves and adjust curtains in graceful folds. Moulding comes with one, two or three grooves so that glass curtains, overdraperies and such may be accommodated with the single fixture. Moulding and tabbed tape are sold by the foot, so that you need buy only what your window measurements call for,

‘based on what you want to believe

rather than fact. It was all right to marry your husband without loving him but now you. feel it is doing him wrong to live with him without loving him. Aren’t you labeling your conduct wrong simply to get out of your marriage Without hurting your conscience? I do not feel capable of "making your decision for you. I only hope youll. keep your reasoning in accord with reality and not distort the facts. JANE JORDAN.
