TAXES IS NEAR

Morgenthau to Issue State- ~~ ment for the Ad-

ministration.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (U.P.).— Secretary of Treasury Henry Mor‘genthau Jr. said today ‘that he would issue a statement on taxation soon which would represent the administration’s views, but he declined to say when the statement ‘would be issued. Morgenthau told a press conference that he had not changed his own opinions which, a month ago, were that new tax legislation to yield at least $6,000,000,000 was needed. He was asked to elaborate on his Monday press conference statement that British and Canadian pggple are paying twice as much income

40 per cent of the trainees in the classes already are women, Mr. Greene said. The U. S, Employment office estimates that 43,000 more industrial

workers will be needed in the city’s|:

7| TO DRAFT PROBLEM

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (U. P)— The major. immediate problem fac-

ing congress as it returns from an informal election recess is the bill allowing conscription of 18 and 19-year-old: youths. Both the senate and house have passed a bill lowering the draft age to 18, but the senate added an amendment which would prohibit the use of teen-age soldiers in combat until they have had a year of The house defeated an attempt to place such a stipulation in the bill. - There was no indication = yet whether the strong Republican gains would have any effect on the final version. Some ‘congressional sources, however, said they had heard that the army might ask President Roosevelt to veto the bill if it carries the training amendment. They pointed out that the army would prefer to continue voluntary enlistment of 18 and 19-year-olds than

to be restricted in the use of youths

Decry Liquor Profit

“Since it is now proposed that our younger men of 18 and 19 years be drafted for service, it is highly important that they be protected from the devastating demoralization of intoxicating liquor. “An increasing number of loyal Americans are feeling that anything which renders inefficient our men in the armed forces is an unimportant and disloyal agent, and that certain interests should not profit by the sale of a product which consumes large quantities of vital materials needed for the successful prosecution of the war.” The group of men signing ‘the letter represented all the Methodist churches in the state which have a total membership of 309,609.
