MADISON, Wis, Oct. 29 (U.P). —White-haired, bombastic John M. Smith, commended by. the federal government for ridding Wisconsin
defense areas of prostitutes, recommended © last night that, street-
under the command. of women officers. “This is a time for realism,” said the 71-year-old state treasurer. «Men can’t control prostitution — won't control it. Women can. You can’t get prostitutes to work in factories. If they wanted to work they wouldn't be, on the streets.
Ring-Around- -Rosy
“But you can’t leave them on the streets. We clean them out of one place and they show up in another. It’s just like a game of ring-around-the-rosy.” Smith, teetotaler, scoffed alike at the suggestion of dry areas around army camps and the proposal of Surgeon Gen. Thomas Parran of the Ui'S. army that prostitutes be cured of disease and placed in war
. | industries.
“In factories they would be under the control of men and that wouldn’t work out,” Smith. said. “You couldn’t keep track of them at ‘night. They should be controlled by women under strict: military discipline.” Smith said that the placing of the brothel-inmates in factories was impractical on two counts. 1. They wouldn’t work. 2. Other ‘women wouldn't work

Gable Takes a Cut . |
Many a movie actor is in the army now and need not bother about high finance. Clark Gable, for instance, who earned $357,500 last year, now: is earning $2400 as a second lieutenant § in the air corps. Most of those movie stars who refused comment were of the opinion that the new regulations were discriminatory agdinst. them, on the theory that they seldom earn top money. for more than a few years.
