THE NORTH IRVINGTON |m Civic League held its annual fall buffet last night in the Pleasant Run Golf club house. Rep. and Mrs. Louis Ludlow, Mayor Sullivan and Albert Gisler, member of the city park board, were guests of honor. . Mr. Ludlow, who made a special

trip from Washington to attend the dinner, praised the work of the organization. Mr. Gisler spoke briefly on the remodeling .of -the Pleasant Run club house into a community cen‘ter. He said that he felt it would ‘build up a better community spirit .and that it was especially important at this time as so many Irvington defense groups needed a place to meet.

Marion county’s October “war ‘| bond campaign lagged at ‘midmonth as reports completed today ‘revealed only 28 per cent of sales toward the $6,411,949 quota. ; James F. Frenzel, Marion county administrator of the war savings staff, said that while industry, offices and some stores are responding to the appeal for 10 per cent| of income, “the majority of Indianapolis business and professional men are still hesitant about investing 10 per cent. It will take 10 per cent from ‘everybody in Marion county to win.” The Marion. county and state {quotas for October were set up on the basis of 10 per cent of the county’s and state’s income over the last five years. Meanwhile, the state, too, lagged behind its quota at mid-month with total sales of $8,710,033. With the .|quota at $24,000,000, sales should be .-1$11,616,000. In Marion county, Chicagd federal reserve bank reports show total sales of only $1,811,043. The first 15 days- represent 48.4 per cent of the month and sales should have totalled $3,103,383.

Slightly Overdone SUCH IS THE background "which the alert studio seized on8 year ago when it eopyrighted the title, “The Flying Tigers.” It. was a good story. It made swell newspaper copy. It couldn’t help but make a good movie. .John Wayne and John Carroll are the mainstays of ‘the cast. They do a good job. The girl in the story is Anne Lee, a blond. She plays the part of a volunteer nurse in love with squadron commander Wayne. Mr. Carroll plays a rn airline pilot- who joins up, woos Miss Lee and causes trouble. Indianapolis folks will have a glimpse of Bill Shirley in the picture. Actually, the cast is fine. The fdea is fine.. What depresses the cinematic value of the picture is the studio’s apparently irrepressible tendency to overdo everything in the most bombastic manner. Long on action, short on some of the dramatic possibilities which never quite develop, “Flying Ti--gers” will keep you edging in your seat to watch the Japs die like flies in a welter of blood and +. flames, : One.of the real achievements in making the picture was the roundup of a bunch of hideous characters to play the Jap pilots, in view of the Jap shortage on the west coast. I have a feeling the kids will go. overboard for this picture,

Alien’s Film Slaps Nazis

Brahm, Native of Germany,

Hates Hitler.

By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2¢—The man who’s making Hollywood's bitterest cinematic indictment of the Nazis turns out today to be John Braham

—enemy alien.

The predicament of Director Braham is funny to everybody concerned, with possible exception of the assistant deputy sheriff, who winds up the parade and never partakes of any of the hospitality. Here’s the situation. . Braham was born in Hamburg, Germany, and achieved fame as one of the continent’s leading movie makers. Came 1934 and he had to

leave Germany. He was a Luther-

an, but the Nazis discovered that

he’d had some Jewish ancestors.

So Braham came to America, applied for citizenship and went to work in Hollywood. Came last Dec. 7, and his citizenship papers still had not cleared. He was an

nocturnal rounds in company of a deputy sheriff. At the moment Braham is directing “Secret Mission,”

wherein the Nazis are sabotaged in occupied France. “Arid most nights I can't get through my work by eight,” Braham reported, “so I take my deputy with me. At first I thought it was going to be embarrassing, but the authorities have turned out to be very sympathetic fellows and we get along fine. “The deputy has got to sit in the front seat with me when I drive home. I offered to take him to his house, but he.said who'd drive me back to mine? So what he has is an assistant, who ‘has to follow us. “Nobody’s mad at- anybody,” he said. my deputy. I even took him to a party the other night. But law is law and the government can't be making exceptions. Only I suppose nobody hates the Nazis more than

enemy alien. And enemy aliens on|-
