and local bosses; as the writer has done
Gov. John W. Bricker of Ohio, provided he is re-elected in for a third term. A ticket often suggested is Dewey and Bricker. The politically powerful and financially well-heeled Pew dynasty of this state is reported looking with favor upon Gov. Bricker. Sen. Robert A, Taft of Ohio, the 1940 runner-up to Mr. Willkie,
"has a lower rating this year. Every-
where, local Republican leaders praise him for his courage and his intelligence, but they always end up by saying he is short on political “it. Mr. Dewey, it is learned, has been approached on behalf of prominent Republicans to lead the fight to rid the party of Mr. Willkie, and is, reported to have expressed a willingness to take on that job. Mr. Willkie, it is judged by those who know him, won't be so easily disposed of.
Nobody But the People
For, while the party bosses don’t him, he still has a large popular following, particularly among younger Republicans. The situation reminds one of the crack made about President Roosevelt back when conservatives of his party were arrayed against him: " “Nobody is for him but the peole.” The 1940 Republican nominee has lined himself up solidly on the side of active parficipation by the United States in establishment of a new world order after the war. That is the issue he 1s going to take to the people continually, and the issue with which he will bombard Republican convention in 1944, if it is still undecided whether or not he has much of a following, in delegate strength. Mr. Willkie is likely to become the William Jennings Bryan of the Republican party, to hammer at the door of the conventions, to appeal to the rank and file over the heads of the regular party leaders, as the late commoner did for so many years and with considerable effect. Or, for another comparison, the late Senator William E. Borah, of Idaho, who used to annoy the regular leaders at Republicans conventions, and whose influence on platform and party policy went far beyond the strength represented by the handful of delegates who might be attached to him. : © Mr. Willkie just can’t be shuffled off.
