and sorrows of German student ‘ life upen the stage. To many American theatergoers, “Old Heidelberg,” the original title of the play, became a symbolic fragment of the culture of a nation which disappeared in 1914, ‘I wonder whether the spirit of “The Student ince” will ever return to its setting. The spirit of freedom, gaiety, equality and fraternity. Long has it been gone from the land of the plague of the brown death. And when it died; youth in that land died with it, and died again in Stalingrad, street by street, and in the sands of North -Africa.. For our particulary time, “The Student Prince” must remain the fantasy of an old German playwright set to music by an American composer. But perhaps it will come again. The free youth of the world will bring it back. ” ” ” “TOBACCO ROAD,” with John ‘Barton, will swing around our way again to play a week at English’s beginning, Nov. 9. Manager Vincent Burke at English’s arranged the booking yesterday. Another November booking is “Claudia,” with the original cast, including Dorothy McGuire, Frances Starr, Donald Cook and Olga Baclanova, due Nov. 16, 17 and 18,

Chorus Joins the
Stage Show.
KEITH'S brings back the chorus in the current vaudeville show | «which opened yesterday. A good chorus always seems to brighten the proceedings on the stage and this one would if some of its members . could dance which some of them can’t. A chorus, it seems to me, Fas always been the weak link in Keith's daisy chain of female entertainment. Perhaps it shows up this way in contrast to the ‘other features which have been consistently skillful. ¢ Trouble is, these gals prance instead of dance and it isn’t the| same. The Four Earls appear on roller skates, inviting first two small boys to make the whirls with them in the arms of the, two hefty male Earls and receive their reward in the form of kisses from the femnale Earls. Next, they whirl a young lady from the audience into dizziness and finally try their luck with a 300pound matron who isn’t quite the whirling type.

DENIES GHILE FAGES NEW CRISIS AT HOME
SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct. 23 (U. P.). — Interior Minister Raul Morales, premier of Chile’s new cabinet, denied reports today that the government faced another political crisis. ° The cabinet was completed yesterday, replacing the regime headed by Foreign Minister Ernesto Barros Jarpa and solving & crisis precipitated by American Undersecretary of State Sumner Welles’ charges that axis agents had been permitted to operate in Chile. It still was not certain whether the new regime would advocate an immediate break with the axis. Under powers granted him by the constitution, President Juan Antonio Rios alone can dictate foreign policy. and-he indicated that he favored a rupture by declaring in a

Joe Arena and his bulldog acrobat.” Joe mystifies the audience by extracting glasses of whisky from his pockets after each tumble, It | probably isn’t whisky, but Joe demonstrates some fancy techniques on how to hold it. The dog is wonderful. A knockabout burlesque on the ballet and adagio is the offering of the Dawn Sisters. Jack Waldion, fast-talking, sometimes -funny, comedian, is master-of-ceremonies.
