President's Indorsement of Norris Leaves May
Backers on Limb.
OMAHA, Neb., Oct. 22 (U. P)~— Nebraska Democrats believed today that the national administration would press for withdrawal of the state’s Democratic, senatorial nominee in favor of Senator George W. Norris, running for re-election as an independent.
When President Rosevelt indorsed Norris Tuesday, he brought the situation created when Norris agreed to seek a sixth term in the sen-

ate, to a head. The Democrats either must repudiate Norris, whom they supported in 1936, and Mr. Roosevelt, or they must repudiate their — own candidate, Foster May, forSenator Norris mer radio newscaster. When the president gave Norris a similar indorsement in 1936, the party ‘deserted its nominee. But party workers expressed doubt today that they could preserve a political organization if they again abandoned a major candidate. They were reluctant to do so but administration pressure to bring about May’s withdrawal already was being exerted. Senator Joseph F. Guffey, - chairman of the Democratic senatorial campaign committee, yesterday announced that his committee would allot no funds to May. Norris, 81, a fixture in congress since 1903, probably is running for office for the last time. He had announced this year that he would not seek re-election, just as he did six years ago. Both times he changed his mind after his followers had filed petitions nominating him as an independent candidate. Norris Leads Poll
In 1936, the Democrats indorsed Norris at: their state convention. This year, the party already has held its convention, which gave May a strongly worded pledge of support. May declined to comment on Mr. Roosevelt’s indorsement. It was known that some administration followers had already
|urged May to withdraw. Norris’ -|friends at Washington recently
asked a former prominent Nebraska Democratic leader, now out of politics, about Norris’ chances in the Nov. 3 election. They received a telegraphed reply: “Norris running third.” The reply was based on the results of a private poll. A later and “scientifically = conducted” private poll, showed Norris leading both May and the Republican nominee, Kenneth S. Wherry. A poll conducted by the Omaha World Herald shows Norris leading with 39.5 per cent, Wherry second with 34.5 and May third with 26.
O'CONNELL CRITICAL OF BIRTH CONTROL
BOSTON, Oct. 22 (U. P.).—His Eminence William Cardinal O’Connell, archbishop of Boston and dean of the Catholic hierarchy in America, called birth control a “grievious violation of God’s law” in a statement last night. “Unequivocally and absolutely the Catholic church denounces birth control,” he said. Massachusetts residents vote on the question of dissemination of birth control information in the Nov. 3 election. “The church teaches,” the Cardinal said, “and history proves, that the practice of artificial birth control inevitably brings in its train woeful consequences to. the indi vidual, the family, the state and the nation. “What is needed today is not the decadence of pagan license but the strength of Christian virtue; not self indulgence but self restraint; not birth control but self control.”
