Indiana-Pitt

: Game Hard

+ To Predict

By UNITED PRESS a glance at last’ week's football

upsets is enough to prove that grid-

prognosticators are in for a ‘winter. week's schedule goesn't make things any easier for ‘Hoosier observers. The brilliant display last Baturday of Indiana’s “Big Three” mikes each contest a close one this week, with the Indiana-Pitt game the toughest nut to crack. The predictions stack up like this: Iowa pre-flight over Notre Dame: The Irish found themselves last week, and probably haven't yet reached their full power. Leahy's illness will weaken them and it’s doubtful if there’s anything in the country to stop the Bernie Bierman powerhouse. A Tough One Ohio State over Purdue: Boilermakers beat Noythwestern but Ohio State appears to be much stronger than Northwestern. The Purdue line is strong defensively, but the Buckeye ‘attack will throw more than the Wildcat backfield did. Indiana over Pittsburgh: The toughest one to pick. The Hoosiers have shown many weaknesses and ‘Pitt was only barely shaded last week by Great Lakes, but McMillin'’s backfield, including Bill Hillenbrind, may find that scoring punch ft lacked at Nebraska. Butler over Wabash: The Bulldogs are due to win. Wabash is no set-up but Butler showed well against Ohio U. and should edge the Little Giants in a close one. a State over Evansville: Neither team has great power but Evansville admittedly has its weakest. team in years. . Franklin over Hanover: The Giizzlies have a slight edge in offefisive strength. 3 In other games: Ball State over Northern Illinois; DePauw over Louisville; Defiance over Earlham; 8t. Joseph's over Illinois Wesleyan; Valparaiso over Luther, and Manchester over Grand Rapids.

LAFAYETTE, Oct. 15 (U. P.)— Coach Elmer Burnham, teaming Brawn with psychology against Ohio State for Saturday's game, today named Vincent (Rocky) Snyder, senior quarterback, acting captain for the encounter—pitting master against star pupil. Snyder, a native of Massillon, O,, received early gridiron training in high school under direction of Paul Brown, now Buckeye mentor. Naming Snyder to the signal-calling position at least will give the Boiler-

makers a slight edge over rugged Ohio State. Meanwhile, Burnham applied pressure yesterday and put squads through defensive and offensive Ohio State plays. Concentrating on a semi-weak backfield, he stressed aerial action in an effort to offset Ohio's expected skyward antics. No major changes were ex-

pected in the Purdue lineup Satur-

a , day.

Three Sophs to Backfield Against Seahawks

Start in Irish

SOUTH BEND, Oct. 15 (U. P.)— Acting Coach Ed McKeever of Notre Dame today said drastic action was taken in an’ effort to re-~ activate three Irish veterans— although none will see action Saturday against Bernie Bierman's powerful Iowa Seahawks. McKeever said casts were set on Dippy Evans’ and Willy Ziemba's knees in an attempt to restore the gridders to action for the rest of the season. Both received knee and leg injuries during early-season games and workouts. Jim Mello, fullback, entered the university infirmary yesterday for a “complete rest.” Bob Livingston, left halfback; Herb Coleman, center, and Corwin Clatt, fullback, all sophomores, were

the named to start against the pre-

flight naval trainees Saturday. Meanwhile, practice was slowed yesterday when a “milk indigestion” epidemic swept the Irish camp, way-laying Angelo Bertelli, Pete Ashbaugh Clatt and Creighton Miller in practice, McKeever said. He emphasized, however, the trouble was not serious.

DePauw to Have

Two Net Coaches

" Times Special GREENCASTLE, Oct. 15.— Evidently believing that if one coach is good two will be better, DePauw's 1942-43 basketball quintet will. be coached jointly by Lloyd L. Messersmith, director of athletics, and Hal Hickman, instructor in physical education. They replace Donovan (Tubby) Moffett, who left DePauw at the close of the last n to become a captain in the air corps. Freshman basketball practice has already started at DePauw. When the freshman squad has been cut, upperclassmen will be asked to report. There will be no separate freshman squad this year, as freshmen are eligible for varsity competition.

Because of Alsab’s two triumphs over the 4-year-old Calumet Comet,

some people’ already have tabbed Mrs. Sabath’s charger the “horse of the year,” but neither that honor nor the 3-year-old title can be bestowed until 'Sab registers another triumph over 3-year-old Shut Out, the somewhat forgotten competitor who showed his heels to Alsab in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes and bowed only to Alsab in the Preakness. Shut Out, still. the year’s top money winner with $238,222, went lame after winning the Travers at Saratoga in mid-August. But now he has recovered and is as good as new. Neither Alsab nor Whirlaway is expected to compete in this $15,000 event. Alsab, it is understood, will concentrate on the Pimlico Special, and then return to Belmont jor the Victory Sweeps. Meanwhile Whirlaway is\ slated; for the Washington Park Handicap: at Laurel, Oct. 24; the Pimlico cial and then the Victory Sweeps. Shut Out, after competing in the Gallant Fox, is expected to run in the Westchester Handicap at Empire City, before sharpening for the

Baugh Boots ‘Em Farther

Times Special CHICAGO, Oct. 15—S am m y Baugh, the Texas rancher, is hack | at his favorite hobby, leading all’ punters in average distance in the National football league. Baugh took over first place from Cherokee Jack Jacobs, the Cleveland Rams’ rookie sensation, whom he also bested in a passing duel last Sunday. Len Barnum of Philadelphia, who holds third place, continues to be the busiest kicker, however. He has punted 28 times in five games against 19 for Jacobs and 13 for Baugh, who has been in only four games. Baugh’s average is 46.4 yards. Ernie Steele, Philadelphia rookie, gained on Parker Hall of Cleveland, in punt returns and now trails the Ram veteran by one. Steele returned three kicks against New York last week, getting away for 62 yards cn one to give him an average of 20.4 yards for seven returns.
