By FREMONT POWER Dear little perplexed , housewife:| We will now solve the meat short- |
It you find the situation at your : focal meat market more’ and more on the shortage side, then consider | the possibility of raising rabbits. There are several reasons to suggest ‘rabbits instead of something| else, one of them being that it is}. against the ‘law to ‘raise hogs in|; Indianapolis. So hogs are out. But rabbits are in. . Right out there In your back- . gard, you could. house 10 does (females), and a. buck (Mr, Rabbit) and have meat for the family four or five times a week. < Jt's done in the old country to great: extent, and so why not ere? Besides, rabbit meat is mighty good eating ‘and ‘rated by the government 23 per cent more nutritious dhan chicken, 8 per cent, more.than tbeef and 18 per cent more than ‘pork. Raising rabbits, you see, would ‘be: patriotic. Keep you strong. < iOn this matter, a rabbit fan has supplied a clip from a magazine which quotes Dr. I. N. Gabrielson, director of the fish and wildlife _ service’ of the interior department. The article said: +. *“‘Rabbits,’ said Dr. Gabrielsan, and it is a shame our fighting men all over the world could not have sheard his every: word, ‘Rabbits are #&he most economical meat producers and can be raised in suburban backyards and ‘in the country with! ia very small investment. It is one sure way of reducing the family ‘meat bill’ “You would be hard pressed to ‘think. ‘of any word that could be;
dent to MacArthur in Australia that would cheer him as much: as the word ‘that those ‘of us- -back home

{President Roosevelt has reiterated
John C. Fehr and a rabbit . . . Gen. MacArthur ‘would be glad.
knowing how Gen. MacArthur feels about rabbits,” but we do know the little animals are great meat producers. The government has a rabbit experiment station at Fontana, Cal and they tried a year-long experiment on 100 does. At the end of that year, they found that the does had produced an average of 105 pounds of meat. John C. Fehr, whose devotion to
the rabbit is somewhat remarkable
to the layman, told us about this as we were looking over his rabbit hutches at 1302 Woodlawn ave. He sald the cost of raising rabbit meat

Mr. Fehr is a man who'd know about this, for he’s a fabbit judge with a national reputation and president of the American Rabbit and Cayy Breeders’ association. “I don’t know why the government hasn’t pushed this rabbit business before now,” Mr. Fehr said,
critically. He told us that, as regards the beginning rabbit raiser, the important thing is ta see that the rabbit has a draft-free hutch of ample They Like the Open
“Some people make the mistake of putting rabbits in a garage or some place,” Mr. Fehr said. Rabbits don’t like this. They want air and you don’t need to worry about them taking care of themselves in cold weather. It’s the hot weather that bothers them, ° Now, once again as to their prac‘ticability, we refer to a letter from a Maj. Ferris U. Cites Case of France
“There is no secret in the fact that the rabbit industry has now turned toward the meat production feature during these times of stress, as France in 1917-18 showed the American doughboy that rabbits could be raised nearly anywhere on nearly anything, and even the poorest family could have a supply of meat that, from other and more expensive sources, would have been prohibited,” the major said, in one long sentence. night, “Mr. Roosevelt said he still hoped the Chilean president would be able to make.his postponed trip “in a short time.” Rios had: been scheduled to leave Santiago today, to arrive here: Oct. 22. The frip, however, was “postponed”. due to Chilean displeasure over the speech made by Acting Secretary of State Sumner Welles at Boston on Oct. 8, in which Mr. Welles said that Chile and Argentina had failed to carry out the Rio de Janeiro conference resolutions recommending severance of relations with the axis. Mr. Welles said that axis agents were operating in these two countries, “for hostile activities against the neighbors.” President Roosevelt’s message to Rios last night completely ignored the Chilean’s complaint against Mr. Welles’ utterances. The Roosevelt message recalled that he had hoped. to - visit: Chile three years ago. Distant relatives of the Delano branch of his family live there.

SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct. 15 (U. P.)—Three Germans accused of espionage and Dr. Hans Borchers, former German. consul general in New York, chargetl with spreading Nazi propaganda, are interned at Zapallar, a seaside resort, it was revealed today. The three alleged spies were arrested last week when the government caught them sending information harmful to one. of the belli-| gerent ‘American republics to a spy organization in another American country, believed to be Cuba. Borchers, detective. headquarters revealed, arrived recently from Spain without credentials and was sent to Zapallar, which is usually isolated, last week.
Agitation Remains
Chilean political ‘circles remained agitated because of Sumner Welles’ charge that Chile and Argentina were harboring Nazi agents responsible for some allied ship losses in the western hemisphere. Rightists were generally supporting President Juan Antonio Rios and Foreign Minister Ernesto Barros Jarpa. The leftists generally supported Rios’ too, but most of them attacked Jarpa, demanding his resignation as:well as the breakingoff of Chile's Siplomaye: relations with the axis. Coxswain Mature Salutes
‘Em All in the Coast Guard
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 15—Coxswain Victor Mature of the U. S. coast guard came to Hollywood on 40hour leave today to take care of his interests. He took care of ‘em. He certainly did. When we arrived at 20th CenturyFox, the mighty Mature was in the lobby demanding of the police department to know how come his portrait wasn't on the wall? A fine thing, said Coxswain Mature, the police department said this oversight would be remedied at once. Mature then dropped by the headquarters of Darryl F. Zanuck. He didn't want to see Zanuck; he wanted to see Zanuck’s secretary. “Have you kept your promise?”
he asked. “I certainly have,” she replied.
Secretary Keeps Promise
“Wonderful,” replied Coxswain Mature. Seems that when he enlisted three months ago, Victor made her promise to remind Zanuck of Mature at least once every week. Then Victor went out on the lot. He went along with us. We'd figured on doing a piece, maybe, about “Coney Island” and Betty Grable in technicolored tights. We'd thought perhaps ‘we'd have a chat with Annabella and with her husband Tyrone Powers doing his last film before he, , Joins the service. This was a ns We. should have known. Victor disrupted the proceedings on every set he visited. He shook hands with every assistant camerman, wardrobe expert and makeup artist. He talked to every chorus girl. A man has got to keep his fences mended, Mature said.
Salufes Everybody
Reluctantly we gave up and put Miss Grable’s ‘tights out of our mind. We sat down with the coxswain and he gave out with the words and here, in sipte of us, is an interview with the handsomest seaman in these parts: When the hunk of man put on his sailor suit (he said) he figured he’d be in trouble with every other seaman in the service. He'd spent most of his life bopping in the nose the folks who called him
