0 ICE from the Balcony by RICHARD LEWIS
My, How We're Growing
% ,
WE WERE SITTING in the restaurant ‘toward midnight the other night, all of us stirring our coffee vigorously in order to derive the maximum amount of nourishment out of the single lump of sugar alloted us, and someone said, my goodness, isn’t it just like noon on
Saturday, almost,
Why it looked like Chicago,’ almost, someone else said. It came
to us then that our town has blown up to be a busy metropolis, all right. It's busier than the last war, someone was saying, and looked to the waitress for confirmation. That, replied the 'waitTess pointedly, was before my time. I was wondering whether it was the additional people downtown that has stimulated the entertainment life or, whether the growing night life has attracted people. One of those chicken-and-the-egg propositions, I supPose. . The entertainment business, they say, is tropistic, it turns toward the crowd, and that’s one theory of why we have .S0 much ‘ of it this fall. = Up on the Indiana roof, which is’ as spacious and decorous a dance spot ‘as one would find in the Middle West, Alice McMahon has booked Eddie Young and his NBC orchestra for Friday night, They will replace Ace Brigode; who finishes a nine-night stand tonight.

Friday Openings
ON FRIDAY, matinee musicale
and the Civic theater open their seasons. The musicale will present Astrid Varnay, soprano of
the metropolitan opera, at 2 p. m. |
at the L. S. Ayres & Fo. auditorium. The Civic’s opener is Max-' well Anderson's new play, “The Eve of St. Mark,” which had its Broadway premiere only a week ago. ie One of most interesting plays of the year, “The Eve of St. Mark” has been taken up by the Playwrights’ Co., Anderson is a member. Judging by the reviews in New York, the play represents the highly variable Mr. Anderson .in a profound and tough: mood. The playwright is concerned with the . problem of whether Americans - are tough enough to take it, and concludes that we are. His storys deals with a farm boy who is drafted from his family and .sent into battle on a Pacific outpost. Faced with the alternative of holding off the advancing enemy and meeting certain death or retreating to safety and life, Mr. Anderson’s boy, Quizz West, de-
and stands firm. It is the kind of an Andersonian analysis of human behavior tha? focused attention on “Key Largo.”
La Boheme
MONDAY, the Martens concert series begins at English’s with the presentation of Charles
.L. Wagner's production of “La
Boheme.” Frances Greer is the new singing star in the cast. Last year, she won the competitive metropolitan opera auditions $1000 award. Guiseppe Bamboschek will conduct the opera. Saturday night, Oct. 24, the Lions club of Indianapolis will present. Don McNeill and his breakfast club of the air, one of the most listened to programs in radio. There will be performances at 7:30 and 9:30 p. m. at the Murat theater. Proceeds of the show will be turned into the
: club’s charity fund.
Finally, on the night before Halloween, a small group of music lovers and: hangers-on in the newspaper field will make an evening of it at the annual gettogether festival thrown by Fabien -Sevitzky, conductor of the Indianapolis symphony. I mention this event, not because it is an event for Mr. Sevitzky to open an ancient bottle or two for the gentlemen of the press, but mindful of the fact that: the Sevitzky get-together preludes the opening of the Indianapolis sym-
. phony orchestra season about the
nones of November. In passing, it might be well to mention that the Pennsylvania Dutch comedy, “Papa Is All” a Theater Guild production, is due at English’s Nov. 2, 3 and 4. Booking was arranged this week. In pausing, if just for a moment, the scrap metal drive isn’t over yet. Bill Elder over at Loew's dug up 2056 pounds of metal, including old railings and air cone ditioning equipment, in the basement of the theater. He has it piled on the stage ready for collection, 1 couldnt find a useful scrap around my desk. I figured on donating my typewriter, but the scrap people said they wanted metal, not rust. Any theater manager who ean beat Mr. Elder's record is ‘invited to communicate the details to this department. Mr. Elder thinks he’s set a record.

ORSON. WELLES’ screen version of Booth Tarkington's famous
novel,
“The Magnificent Ambersons,” is one of those fine bits of
screen entertainment that hasnt been done justice by .Hollywood. Its cast is not composed of the biggest names in the film capital
but it is doubtful if any others could have done any better.
The
photography of Stanley Cortez is outstanding and the narration by
Mr. Welles during the film is of the same excellent grade it always has been. Tim Holt has the role of George Amberson Minafer and Anne Baxter is cast as Lucy Morgan. The remainder of the cast includes Joseph Cotten as Eugene Morgan, Dolores Costello as Isabel Amberson Minafer, Agnes Moorehead as Fanny Minafer, Ray Collins as Jack Miss Baxter Amberson, Richard Bennett as Major Amberson and Donald Dillaway as Wilbur Minafer. ° It is playing at the Zaring through Saturday. " on » BETTY GRABLE makes frequent appearances in dancing trunks and Victor Mature and John Payne run around in their ; undershirts in “Footlight Serenade,” another new vehicle this week. One thing that distinguishes it from other musicals is the fact that it has a story that amounts to something. Mr. Miss Grable Mature is a heavyweight boxing champ who backs ‘a show because he’s crazy about show girls. Both he and Mr. Payne make eyes at Miss ‘Grable and there are some dandy boxing scenes that give the boys an opportunity to commit mayhem. It will be at the St. Clair, Strand and Uptown through Saturday, the Granada for a week,
beginning tomorrow, and the Irv-
ing tomorrow through Sunday. » » ” WALLACE BEERY looks as though he bounced off a freight train and carries a‘ six-shooter again in “Jackass Mail,” a film which he carries from the beginning to the end. Marjorie Main plays: the role of the over-age frontier belle. It will be at the Belmont through Saturday, the Irving and Rivoli to- : morrow through Sunday, the Mr. Beery Speedway, Friday and Saturday, and the St. Clair, Strand and Uptown Sunday through Tuesday.
