Townsend Hopes, Yale halfback (No. 14), crosses his legs and sits on Bert Stiff (No. 33), Pennsylvania fullback, who has scored a touchdown. This was the first score Saturday as Penn went on to win, 35 to 6. Fullback John Ferguson (No. 36) of Yale arrived too late to
do any damage.

JOE WILLIAMS SAYS—
NEW YORK, Oct. 13~Putting
« 8ne little word after another (some
of the customers wrote in and asked for it, no fooling) and whatever became of the cut-rate tire sales? There seems to be a feeling in some circles that Lieut. Col, Larry MacPhail has only temporarily disassociated himself from the Brooklyn Dodgers, This isn’t true. The colonel made it plain when he retired that he was retiring permanently. Thus whoever succeeds the firecracker of Flatbush will not be a stop-gap selection; that’s why
_ the stockholders are giving the mat-
deep consideration. Incidentally, the colonel was the highest priced
- executive in baseball, not excluding _ old. Judge Landis, The Brooklyns
paid him $85,000 last season, $50,000 in salary, $35,000 in bonuses. And in our book he was worth every dollar he got. Erratic, flamboyant, inflam‘mable; even exhausting at times, still there was no getting away from the fact the redhead was a genius in his own way. He made every job a Hollywood production but he always got results in the smashing manner. If the army gives
i a chance, he’ll do a job there,

against the Chicago Bears. Any other pairing would simply mean a better game so the team identifications at this stage need not be a matter of concern. We have a stadium big enough and what is just as important, if not more so, the transportation facilities. Such a game would ornament an already attractive football program hereabouts and couldn’t miss at the box office. Besides it would react favorably to the energy and imagination of the association. ®. #8
The Gopher Fans
THE MINNESOTA FOOTBALL addict is fortunate this ‘season, When the college team loses he can still point .to Bernie Bierman with pride, The college team was upset unexpectedly by Illinois Saturday when a lowly guard—a sort of Kurowski of the day—stole a Minnesota ball for one touchdown and pounced on a loose ball in the end zone for another. A guard will score two touchdowns in a major game about as often as Mr. Willkie will say, “No comment.” Before he returned to the marines, Bierman used to coach those awesome Minnesota machines. And it was a day of miracles when anybody beat him. Fritz Crisler, who coaches Michigan, knows all about Col. Bierman. In fact, he induced the colonel to leave Tulane for Minnesota. Mr. Crisler, in turn, was leaving Minnesota for Princeton. Later, Mr. Crisler shifted to Michigan and there it was his dangerous pleasure to tilt with the colonel’s Minnesota teams once a year.

Frank Leahy Awaits X-Ray Results
ROCHESTER, Minn., Oct. 13 (U. P.)—Frank Leahy, Notre Dame football coach, awaited -a diagnosis today of the ailment which brought him to the Mayo clinic last week. Leahy said he expected physicians to reveal the results of X-rays soon. The coach, who collapsed at his desk at South Bend last Friday, believed his condition might be the result of a four-year-old back injury. Attendants at St. Mary's hospital
said his condition was “unchanged.”
