ago Daily News, Inc. BERN, Oct. 9.—Nazi leaders, in their quest for manpower, have ‘converted all the reich’s prisons #nd tentiaries into regular “instrial concerns,” working on a Aree-shift basis. This disclosure Was made by its Berlin correspondt the Basler National Zeitung,

o flatly counters Labor Commis-|

sloner Fritz Sauckel’s recent boast that Germany's labor problems are now solved. i Despite the 6,000,000 foreigners reported by Reichsmarshal Hermann Goering to. be working in Germany today and several million war prisoners, there is still a shortage of

A prison in south Germany described as “not one of the largest,” turns out monthly almost 2000 yards of cloth, 2750 yards of . linen, 6000 pairs of shoes, 10,000 pairs of clogs and 34,000 finished ‘articles of clothing. :Income from © these prison industries for the last financial year, the newspaperman discloses, totaled more than 80,000,000 marks. Convicts receive very inferior ~ prison rations. Their = so-called wage of a “few pfennigs” may theo_retically be used for obtaining supplementary supplies. In fact; convicts are strictly limited to prison fare, costing them about 40 pfennigs a day. At the day’s end no ‘ evening’s relaxation awaits these “forced” laborers of the Reich.
