flation brake. Revise Estimates Upward
The estimated deficit for the fiscal year which ends next June will be $63,060,000,000. That will send the national debt to $140,051,000,000 by June 30, 1943, when the current fiscal year ends. The national debt as of Oct. 3 was $91,227,000,000. Revised estimates were announced by the budget bureau with an ex- . planation that the upward trend was in war expenditures. President Roosevelt estimated those expendi- ~ tures at $58,000,000,000 last January. He revised them upward to $70,-
- $78,000,000,000 today. Smith said the - increase - was
‘caused by expanding war produc-|.
tion, - higher pay for the armed
dependents. ‘New estimates .included $700,000,000 for subsidies: including war risk insurance on cargoes ‘and ocean freight and on transportation of coal and petroleum.

September war expenditures agSregated $5,500,000,000, up from $1,- ' 800,000,000 the month Pearl Harbor was attacked. They will go to $6;000,000,000 a month by Jan. 1. Since June, 1940, congress has authorized $230,000,000,000 for the ‘war program of which $50,000,000,000 had been spent up to Sept. 1, Much of that went for new plants now going into production of munitions. Smith said non-war expenditures were being reduced despite the interest load of nearly $2,000,000,000 for the national debt, after deducting interest charges and trust. account operations amounting to’ $1,198,000,000, non-war expenditures for this fiscal year now are ‘estimated at $4,194,000,000 c ed with $5,125,000,000 in the last fiscal ‘year and the $4,392,000,000 : estimated for the current fiscal year by

Comparisons for Man-in-Street
WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 -(U. P.).—A few comparisons for the man-in-the-street on the vast sums of money in the government's “revised spending schedule for this fiscal year: For the year ending next June 30, the government plans to spend $86,183,000,000. That's" equivalent to $233,000,000 a ~day; $9,720,000 an hour; $162,000 a minute, and $2700 a sec= ond—more than twice as much as the average American earns in a year. That's enough to give every man, woman and child in the United States about $635. The comparisons on the ex‘pected © public debt of next June — $140,051,000,000 — are even, more startling. Theoretically, that will. mean that every. man, woman and child in the United States will owe $1045. That many billions is enough to buy every American a glass of beer each day for more than 28 years; enough to buy every American a quart of milk each day for more than 20 years; enough to buy every American ~a Swanky $2.50 dinner once a week, including the tip, for more than eight years,
