Larry Atkins announced today.

Dudley Leads Pro Carriers

CHICAGO, Oct. 7 (U. P).~Bill

Dudley, the former University of|g

Virginia star now with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football league, was back in the familiar role of a pace-setter today. Dudley, who is getting a. chance to play pro football because he’s too young to be called for military duty

i [under the selective service act, took

over the lead among the ball car-|

riers in the latest averages of the paid-to-play performers. In three games Dudley has gained 205 yards in 35 ball-carrying efforts for an average of 59 yards per try. A season ago Dudley was the key wan in a Virginia team that rolled to eight victories in nine starts. The Cavaliers’ only setback was a 21-to-10 defeat at the hands of Yale. . Led Collegiate Scorers Dudley was a “one-man offense” for Virginia, He led the nation’s collegiate scorers with 134 points, the result of 18 touchdowns and 23 conversions, Bill carried the ball 157 times from scrimmage during the 1941 campaign for a total gain of 857 yards and completed 58 out of 107 passes. Twelve of the successful aerials were good for touchdowns. For the season Dudley had an aggrégate record of gaining 2467 yards by rushing, pass receiving,

punt and kick-off returns.

Athletic director R. V. Copple, Coach Paul Wetzel and Earl Town-

send Jr. (left to right above) make

plans for Tech high school's home-

coming football game Friday against Anderson. Townsend is presi-

dent of the alumni association.

‘ Hartford Featherweight Signs

For Title Match With Wright

NEW YORK, Oct. 7 (U. P.)—Out of Hartford, Conn. comes the deadliest young dynamiter the featherweight division has known in

~ years, His name is Willie Pep, though he was born Gugliermo Papleo,

and he is far more effective than if he were a breakfast food belter—

which he is not. Willie Pep has belted his way Champion Chalky Wright at Madison Square Garden, Nov. 20. And when young Pep steps into the

. ping, he will be favored at about 2-1.

Pep, who has registered 51 straight

- professional victories, is confident

that he can wrest the feather title from : Wright, the ancient Los Angeles Negro who is making his third defense of the title. Pep is positive for reasons of youth, zing and punch. City of Featherweights

Willie is a good -puncher—in fact one of the greatest feather punchers the division has known in years. He can belt an opponent's brains ut with either hand. He demontrated that explosive ability recently at the Garden when he knocked out Frank Franconeri of Bayonne, N. J., in the first round. Young Pep hopes to bring to Hartford the same featherweight crown that was worn by two other natives of the insurance city—Kid *Kaplan and Bat Battalino. . Willie-the-walloper was attending high school and fighting as an amateur when his father became ill and his mother had to go to work. to feed Willie, his 14-year-old sister and a T-year-old brother. Willie says, “I left school to get 8 job as a stockboy in a wallpaper place, I didn't like it, so I decided to turn pro. But before that happened I fought one night for $50, ‘as an amateur,’ and for $100 another night. It all seemed like a miracle—getting that kind of money for fighting. But it wasn’t long before I was getting more.

‘Hit and Run’ Battler

Young Pep advanced rapidly. He had what it takes—a deadly punch plus unusual speed afoot and in boxing technique. Hartford Willie made money. He says, “I bought my folks a house. Now I'm going to see ‘that the younger kids in my family get an education. Sure—I got a gal, but I'm not planning on marriage. I want to make all the money I can for my parents before I go into service—which I surely will.” Willie Pep is one of the most pe‘culiar fighters the ring has ever known, He is a “hit-and-run” battler. He moves in and throws a punch with either hand that will knock one groggy—end then darts away. : Many of the men he hits with that first punch go out completely. Others come for more. But he assures, I hit old man Wright, the fight will be ended. Because he's too old to take what I throw.”

Shapiro Surprises Bob Montgomery

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 7 (U, P.). —Magxie Shapiro, 28-year-old New York lightweight, won a surprise 10-round decision over Bob Montgomery of Philadelphia last night before T7500 fans at the Arena. Shapiro won easily and had Montgomery in trouble from the third round on when he rocked him with a right to the chin and then floored him twice for counts of one and three. : Montgomery tied up Shapiro with a two-fisted attack to the body in the sixth, but the New Yorker bounced back in the seventh with

| right crosses that left Montgomery

on the ropes. Motacmary weighed 135; Shapiro, 134%.

‘Pop’ Has Mumps; Floyd Takes Over

Frank (Pop) Hedden, acting athletic director and head football coach at Butler university, has the mumps. Hedden will be shut in for several weeks while his assistant, Walt Floyd, directs the team for its game with Ohio university Saturday at Athens. The Bulldogs have dropped three in a row. In their last two contests they have been scored upon for 120 points by Indiana and Illinois. Knute Dobkins and Harold Miller, ends who were injured in the Indiana game, are working out again for this Saturday. Charles Kovatch, 8 newcomer from South “Bend, was in uniform yesterday, while big Tom Sleet, fullback, was absent with influenza.

Howe Golfers Win

Invitational Meet

Joe Wilson’s 74 led Howe high school golfers to victory yesterday as the Nast side team defeated Shortridge in a playoff for the individual school tournament championship at Pleasant Run. Howe's four shooters had a 337 total to Shortridge’s 355. In addition to Wilson the winners’ scores were Bill Hanafee, 79; Bob Stanfill, 86, and Ed Broden, 98. Fred Fitchey paced Shortridge with an 83. Other scores were Jim Spoon, 835; John Smith, ol, and Dick Gilchrist, 100.

| Yankees received world series ticket

Those achievements were good

enough to make him the chief rival}

of Bruce Smith of Minnesota for the “player of the year award.” Dudley gained his share of the ballots for the coveted honor as he won the Walter Camp and Maxwell trophies for outstanding grid work. The accumulation of honors resulted in Dudley being the first player chosen when the National league had’ its anndal “selection” meeting last season. He went to Pittsburgh and time has proved the wisdom of the Steelers’ move.

Thompson, Top Passer

In addition to being the pro circuit’s top ground gainer, Dudley ranks eighth among the league passers with 13 completed tosses in 28 attempts. His passes have been good for 128 yards. Only two Dudley aerials have been intercepted. In scoring he’s in a tie for eighth place while playing with a club that has scored but 41 points in winning one out of three starts. Merle Condit of Brooklyn is second to Dudley among the ground gainers with 104 yards. Condit has the best yardage average with 8.4 yards per try for his 28 efforts. Top passer in the league is Tommy Thompson of the Philadelphia Eagles, who has clicked on 37 out of 72 attempts for a gain of 573 yards. Condit and Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers are tied for the scoring lead with 24 points each. The five leaders in each department follow: BALL CARRYING * Yards Atts. Gained 3 ro 174
