land where a thousand years of isolation has been broken in the last two years by the arrival first of
British and then of American troops. : . The arrival of large numbers of
troops in the thinly populated country has produced complex results, For instance:
..The standard bootleg price for al ;
bottle of whisky is $45. American army majors of one
division are required to be home in| §|
their quarters by midnight. Plenty Tires but Car Is Costly
Soldiers in the same outfit are forbidden to put pictures of thinlyclad girls on the walls of their huts. Gasoline and tires are plentiful —but a five-year-old used car costs $3000, if you can find one.: Banana trees grow in hothouses within sight of glaciers and. grapes are sold in florists’ shops.
Army officers below the rank of|
colonel are forbidden to enter the U. S. army air base without a spe-

One Icelander refused $50,000 for his two-story stucco house because, he said, the house would be worth something after the war but the money wouldn't. The language is so much like the Norwegian tongue of 900 years ago that modern Norwegians can't understand it. Tourists have dropped 120 pounds great geyser to make it erupt and bubble. Davis, head of the army specialists corps, in disclosing that the ASC has an iinmediate objective of 14,00C specially qualified officers. But while there is a shortage in
in others, according to Gen. Davis— a former secretary of war—and this helps to explain why thousands who have sought ASC commissions have not been called." The supply of technical manpower is tightest in radio, electrical and
engineering, photography, cost accounting, ‘mechanical . tabulation and industrial plant management.
Need Salvage Operators
There also is a scarcity of expert salvage operators, utilities and plant maintenance engineers, A. motionpicture operators, transportation specialists, teletype operators and men with department-store experience fo run army post exchanges. But there is an .over supply of architects, building contractors, real estate operators, lawyers, salesmen, civil engineers, textile experts, geologists, bacteriologists and biologists. The ASC was set up by executive order rather than by legislation, and it ran into some early trouble in congress because of this. A move to provide authorizing legislation is under study.
Don't Need Some Classes
There have been complaints from many who offered their services through the ASC that nothing came of it, but ASC officials reply that the army’s demands are scant for men with certain kinds of training —salesmanship for example—who have volunteered by the thousands. Tens of thousands of applications for service poured into Washington before there was an organization to handle them, but officials say the ASC machinery is functioning now. Officials could not. disclose how many commissions are being issued, but said applications for specialists from various army units increased by 3'2 times so far this, month over the corresponding, August period. Commissions issued! doubled in the same period.
Take Men Up to 60 o
The ASC is composed chiefly of men from 35 to 60. Regulations bar pppointment of men in class 1=A of the ‘draft and others who might be subject to early call. Appointinent to the corps does not change an appointment’s draft status. The ASC does not direct a man into service until it has a specific request for a person in his field of experience. The objective is to free army officers from desk jobs for combat duty. More than 270,000 applications for ASC service has been received.
