Four Rules for Conserving Heat
In the Apartment or Small Home
MANY APARTMENT DWELLERS from coast to coast have made
up their minds to “take it” with lower temperatures indoors this winter
In the cause of fuel conservation—all hopes and expectations of land- |

DEAR JANE JORDAN-—I have Tead several articles concerning war time marriages, and I would like to state. my opinion in the matter. + I am a soldier's wife and I am proud of it. We were married on his furlough. Some people say I was silly for doing such a thing. They may be right, but I would never agree with them. . efia When my hushand came home on #4 10-day - furlough he' asked -me to ‘marry him. I couldn't refuse be‘cause as he put it, it gave him ‘courage to know that he had some- - one to love him and stick by him. That is what I intend to do. People preach about marrying while the
‘apartment ‘houses (also two-family {houses and private homes in which
a suite of rooms is rented), considerable savings in fuel can be effected. “- The following suggestions for cooperation will prove useful in the months ahead: 1. Windows ‘are great wasters of heat. Where double panes are not in use, rooms will be warmer on cold days and nights if Venetian blinds are closed or window shades are pulled down, or heavy draperies are drawn across the windows. 2. It ‘is a universal custom to conceal radiators by means of covers,
shelves or enclosures. Unless such|
covers or_enclosures are designed correctly and made properly, they retard or restrict the free circula~ tion of air over the radiator and the room is chilled. » » »

if it is, then the covers, shelves or enclosures should be removed. Also, some form of insulation or insulating material installed behind radiators which are placed against outside walls is effective in keeping the heat within the apartment.
3. ‘When the windows in a room
are opened for purposes of airing, the door to that room should .be closed. In case the heating is a warm air system, as in a private home or small multiple dwelling, the register in the room should be closed to prevent the cold air from the open windows rushing through the register to the furnace and chilling the air circulation to the other . rooms. 4. This is an inefficient way of heating the kitchen anyhow and now might develop a shortage at ak periods for gas has hundreds { uses in the produetion of defense terials.
