est Hemingway’s novel for movie production with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman in the starring roles, the head men planned to build a Spanish mountainside on the back lot. Most of the action was to occur there and the boys figured that $46,000 was a low price to pay for a special, made-to-order mountain.

$200,000 in 10 Weeks

[ Then the government came along with an order limiting the cost of new materials in any off picture to $5000. There would have been around $12,000 worth of lumber in that one mountain. So ProducerDirector Wood and actors took to the hills. They stayed there 10 weeks. They spent $200,000. “The trouble,” said Wood today, “was that whoever was responsible for erecting. those mountains in the first place did so without any regard for the, exigencies of picture making. We had to take our scenery where we could find it. Our story called for a mountain with a cave in it. We had the mountain,

FAIR EEIIIIIIIIII IIR The difficulty seemed to be that the picture was being shot in technicolor and the landscape was too doggone beautiful for the mood of the story. Wood sprayed paint on everything, trees, boulders, clover fields and roads, to give 'em a kind of eerie, grayish quality. That's what the “crazy men” were doing.
