Homes Near London’ |

~ Are ‘War Factories’ Times Special LONDON, Sept. 24—One hundred and. fifty housewives in a North London suburb have turned their homes into small-scale war factories. a Working part time as a sideline

started when they - petitioned tne

for permission to take a more active part in the war effort, They all had sewing machines, they said, 50 couldn't they be of some use? Today it’s a regular weekly sight in this block of 150 houses to see a, large gray-green truck drive up and deposit bundles of webbing tn each porch. Some houses only get a four-gross bundle, others receive the six-gross allotment. When you see. a porch with the smaller package you know there ‘is an extraordinarily large number ‘of children inside, / This material, delivered unfin-

ished and always traded for the|

completed goods, is supplied by ‘the government, Specifically, the women

and mortar holders. ; There’s nothing amateurish about the finished product, either. kK Most of the mortar belts used in the Syoceat. commando raid on ‘Dieppe were made by the women of this North London suburb.

ters, ' when prepared . or used in aluminum, may leave a film, frequently dark colored, upon the surface of the aluminum pan. This film contains .iron and other mineral substances which are natural components of food and water. The film will not’ discolor the food and is perfectly harniless. These films form more readily when the aluminum is in contact with. water of an alkaline nature. They may be readily removed by using any good cleanser made especially for pblishing aluminum. The cleanser consists: of pads of fine steel wool and a special soap. Strong alkali cleaners such as soda, soda solutions, ammonia and lye, should never be“used. Frictional materials are used to clean silver, such as whiting, rouge, commercial pastes and powders. An alkaline solution for cleaning silver is made as follows: Dissolve 4 teaspoons of borax, 3 teaspoons washing soda or 2 teaspoons lye (caustic soda) in 1 quart of water. The silver is placed in‘an old kettle or pan and covered with this solution, boiled for 10 minutes and then rinsed in hot water and rubbed dry. One method. of ‘removing tarnish is by electrolysis. Fill an enameled ‘pan with water, heat this solution to .the boiling ‘point, put in several strips of aluminum or bright zinc, add tarnished silver and boil. When the tarnish has disappeared, remove

and dry with a clean cloth,

wouldn't talk to me. snubbed me. I like her a lot. ‘In fact, I wanted to make her my wife before I left for the navy. So I am asking you,

PUZZLED: \ » » » Answer—The first thing for you to do it to face firmly the fact that} you aren't grownup enough to marry. Marriage is a job for a man and you're only 17. You haven’t even develped as much reility as we expect of a boy . This you proved beyond the shadow of a doubt when you took ‘drive in a car that didn’t belong to you and got your girl fired from her job.

It isn’t ‘good judgment for a boy|

to call on a girl when the peopie who employ *her are away from home. It is even worse judgment for ‘you to use the property of people who are away from home. You've acted like a little boy, and the only sensible thing for you to do is to postpone your proposal of marriage until you are old enough to see these things for yourself. You can apologize to the girl for getting her in trouble. You can ask her to write to you while

you're in the navy. If she is too].

disgusted with you, it will be comparatively easy for you to make friends with other girls. The navy will help you a lot in the process of growing up. You'll be quite a different person when you come back, ready to keep out of small-boy escapades and able to laugh at yourself for seriously en-|. tertaining the -idea of marriage at 17. Don’t worry about losing your girl. This has been a valuable lesson to you if you. will take it to heart. Actually it is a good thing that something stopped you from marrying before you know what you're doing. Good luck.
