* Purdue Captain For Saturday
LAFAYETTE, Sept. 28 (U. P.)— Alex Leugo, Chicago, veteran letcenter, yesterday was desig-| : ~ nated. captain-elect of the Boilermakers for the ‘Purdue-Fordham mitle Saturday 'at Ross-Ade sta-
Leugo, a graduate of Fenger high school of Chicago, played only three minutes last year because of a knee injury. As the Boilermakers moved into the final phases of practice for their opener, Coach Elmer Burnham again divided his varsity I scrimmaging. ‘With each squad part i of the time on offense, the varsity defensive lineup composed of Smock and Andretich at halves, Hajzyk at quarter, - Buffington at fullback, Smerke and Bright at ends, French at right tackle, and Barwegan at . right tackle, gave some hint as to the lineup which Burnham will { : choose for the Fordham game. The defensive threat shifted from a five to seven-man lineup, using ars idea at countering the forward passing tactics of Steve Pilipcowicz. It was apparent that much of the Boilermaker efforts will be centered on Filipcowicz, the Ram " all-America candidate who completed 37 out of 101 passes good for 724 yards list season.
Leahy Shifts Dove to End
SOUTH BEND, Sept. 23 (U.P) .— Bob Dove of Youngstown, O., Notre Dame’s all-American end last year, was moved back into his familiar) slot ay by Coach Frapk Leahy when a dislocated right elbow shelved Sophomore Jack Zilly - for an indefinite period. 2 Zilly, who is from Southington, Conn., was one of three promising _ sophomores routed from the left i end spot vacated when Leahy moved Dove into left guard to fill a gap

In all-round speed the 1942 model of the Gas House Gang may have it on them because Red Rolfe has slowed down at third base and Buddy Hassett can't run with Johnny Hopp.
Have No Peer
baseball has seen a keystone combination as speedy as Gordon and Rizzuto. They play like it’s against the law -for an opposing batter to lay one through the midlle. Turning what look like base hits into outs is a habit with them. Many baseball men contend they are the key to Yankee success. They have no peer as a double play combination. So far as speed goes, Brooklyn has only one man near their class— Shortstop Peewee Reese. When it comes to fielding, there is little to choose between Rizzuto, Reese and Martin Marion, the long-legged Cardinal whose improvement this season has played
i created by Bob Maddock’s gradu- | ation and the decision - to “Jack Barry and Matt Bolger to enter pre- . flight training at Iowa City. Bob McBridge of Lancaster, O., . ghifted into the left guard post. McBride understudied Maddock last year and is one of the junior lettermen on the squad. Others are Angelo Bertelli, quarterback, and Creighton Moller, halfback. The Irish, beginning to appear anxious over their opener Saturday against Wisconsin at Camp Randall, went through dummy scrimmage against Badger plays.

Up to yesterday's games, Rizzuto was hitting .283 and had batted in 67 runs against 277 and 54. for Marion and .258 and 52 for Reese. Hassett, rescued from the Boston Braves, is a better hitter than Hopp {or Ray Sanders, who have divided the St. Louis first base chores with Hopp officiating during the stretch drive and - likely to see all ‘the action in the world series. Red Rolfe, winding up his baseball career, always has been a money player and is likely to give the Yankees the edge if he is well enough to play in the series. His batting average doesn’t compare with that of his understudy, Gerry Priddy, or of his rivals, Arky Vaughan and rge Kurowski, the Cardinal rookie, but he is a danger- | ous man in a clu and has broken up plenty of ball games. i There is little to choose between the three when it comes to flelding. Best Infield in World Series
NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (U, P.)—~Whether it’s the speed merchants of St. Louis or Brooklyn's three old men and a boy the 1942 world series may see some of the best infield play in baseball history. ; And, if figures don’t lie, the New York Yankees will turn it in.
