Warner Bros. Says 'No'

" THE GOVERNMENT'S sensational film,

“The World at War,”

“Won't play at the Indiana Wednesday as we reported last week. - The 68-minute feature, on which local theaters were counting to stimulate

bond purchases, has been withdrawn at the demand of Warner Bros.

‘Manager Kenneth Collins of the Indiana reeeived notice of the ' cancellation over the week-end from his’ New York office—which had

with its own “Yankee Doodle ‘Dandy,” which now will open at the Indiana Wednesday on a

_#ingle bill, at advanced prices. Indications are plain that the ‘theater chain and Warners

scrapped over the studio’s demand. But the studio won.

Some theater men in town are |

plainly chagrined over the deal. Not only do they—as well as newspapermen who saw it-—con-Sider “The World at War” one of the year’s great films, but they figured it would help them sell

+ bonds. The motion picture indus-

try has pledged to sell a billion dollars worth of bonds this month. Mr. Collins assures us that he will show “The World at War” as soon as “Yankee Doodle Dandy”

~ glears the Indiana. By that time,

though, the industry’s September bond drive may, be over. RB

» Dollar Studio. ° IN CONTRAST fo Warner's attitude on the U. S. film, the industry ~ generally is doing yeoman’s work for Uncle Sam. The current “Stars Over America” war bond campaign is costing the film industry $60,000 in. railroad fares alone for film folk who are traveling 21,000 miles to visit 300 cities. . . . Walt Disney’s studio is 80 per cent devoted to nonprofit government war films. . . . Hollywood has a $l1-a-year studio. It “was donated to the government far war film production by 20th Century-Fox. . . . Movie theaters raised more than $2,000,000 for army and navy relief so far this year. When Uncle Sam has a war message to put across, the industry’s war activities committee furnishes 15,000 theater screens free. . . . Thus far, 161 current features have been given to the army and havy for exhibition fo service men overseas.

promote the movie bond drive, Manager Harold De Grauw of Oneonta, N. Y. persuaded the city’s merchants to give away a bond. to fhe first baby born in September. The first baby was born to’ Mr. and Mrs. Harold De Grauw. The amazed Ipanager declined to accept the bond, fearing somebody would shout, “collusion!” In St. Louis, the manager of the Roxy pledged a $10,000 bond sale on the opening night of the September bond drive. Imagine the let-down when the audience came through with only $6000 worth of pledges. Leaping to the stage, he stopped the show and vowed it wouldn't go on until the audience ran the total up to $10,000. Somebody in the audience suggested an auction be held. Only thing the manager had to auction was season passes to the show. The bidding began for the passes. In 15 minutes, the show resumed. Bond sales had reached $11,600. 8 8 o
