LOOMINGTON, Sept. 17 (U. P.). oach A. N. (Bo) McMillin’s Indiana university football squad went through one of its most intensive sgrimmage sessions of the Year yesterday against a picked freshman team and came out ahead by six touchdowns. The first score agairyt the rhinie squad was the result of an 80-yard

march climaxed with a pass from Bill Hillenbrand to Pete Pihos, one of the Hoosier mentor’s most prom{sing sophomore ends. Fullback Hugh McKinnis went over from the threeyard. line following a 30-yard runback of a punt by Hillenbrand for the second tally.

Bob Cowan of Ft. Wayne racked |"

up the third with a 55-yard run and also paved the way for the

Deal who went over from the 10yard strip. Hillenbrand scored the fifth marker when he ran a punt back 60 yards and the Evansville ace also passed 40 yards to Bob Dean of Bloomington, who scored the final six points. Howard Brown, who started the session at right guard, suffered a sprained left arm and Earl Doloway, veteran Hoosier punter, was cut about the face in yesterday’s workout. Neither was reported injuteq

He also kept Creighton Miller, fullback, on the sidelines, after Miller suffered injuries for the third time since the Irish began their workouts. The Irish mentor indicated that it was entirely ‘possible the two ace backfield men would be benched during the Wisconsin game, Sept. 26. He said “I don’t want to take any chances—I want them both in good condition for the rest of the season.” .

70 Men on DePauw Football Squad

Times Special GREENCASTLE, Sept. 17.—Unhampered by injuries, Coach “Gaumy” Neal's T0-man squad of DePauw university grid aspirants is rapidly rounding into form for the season’s opening encounter with the University of Rochester at Greencastle on Sept. 26. Grueling conditioning scrimmages under the direction of Neal's new assistants, Mel Brewer and Hal Hickman, have toughened the Tigers for their 1942 schedule which calls for games on eight successive Saturdays.

Burnham Has but One Promise To Fulfill for Boilermakers

By DON CARLSON United ‘Press Staff Correspondent LAFAYETTE, Sept. 17.—Elmer Burnham, Purdue's new head foot-

Burnham, for seven years Purdue’s freshman grid mentor, succeeded wizened little Mal Elward when the latter resigned after a disastrous 1941 campaign. Thoroughly familiar with the peculiar problems a coach

Bill Shiner :

promise he made when he took over

here faces, Burnham avoided any claims of boosting the Boilermakers into the title picture and confined himself to sa promise that Purdue would become offensive minded. Purdue won two games and lost six last season. In five of the games the Boilermakers failed to score and their total points for the campaign amounted to only 27. Burnham's first move in taking over the job was to abandon the conventional Rockne offense that Elward used. Ih its place he adopt~ ed a short punt formation and a modified box. The new style makes better use of the available material.

12 Lettermen Lost

It would be too much to expect Purdue to give Minnesota, Michigan, Northwestern, Indiana and Ohio State a battle for the top spots in the Big Ten standing, but it is safe to predict the Boilermakers will be improved over their rating of a year ago. Twelve lettermen were lost by graduation and military calls took five more, but Burnham has 18 gridders who won their monograms back as the nucleus for his squad. In addition to the lettermen there are 22 other players on the varsity squad and approximately 40 Burnham more on a “B” squad. Since Burnham is interested in going out and getting points, a starting backfield has claimed much of his attention. The quartet likely to get first call will be composed of three players who saw considerable service last season and one ball carrier up from reserve ranks. Bob Hajzyk, a junior, will be at quarterback, with Ken Smock, former Shortridge player, at fullback. This quartet has speed, but not too much size. Buffington and Andretich at 190 pounds are the heaviest with Smock and Hajzyk scaling 175 pounds each,

Ott Hurrle Makes Squad It isn't any one of the four starters however who has taken the early season practice spotlight. That honor is divided between Henry Stram, a 162 pound “scat back” from Gary and Andy Berkley, a 170 pounder from Dayton, Ky. both are sophomores and likely will be held out for “spot” duty. Six lettermen and a sophomore will compose the first string line. The lone newcomer able to win a starting job is Dick Barwegen, a 200 pound guard from Chicago. The rest of the line will have Forrest McCaffry and Bill Shimer, former Souhtport high school star, at the ends; Bruce Warren and Barry French at the tackles; Bill

wegen; and Alex Luego at center. Outstanding replacement prospects on the line are sophomores Bill O'Brien, an end; Otto Huwrle, a center; and Cecil David and Ralph Clymer, guards.. Hurrle played at Cathedral two years ago. Purdue starts its season by meeting two tough non-conference opponents. The Boilermakers face Fordham at Lafayette on Sept. 26 and meet Vanderbilt om Oct. 3. Other opponents on the schedule are Northwestern, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Great Lakes, Michigan State, Indiana and Camp Shelby, Miss.

Browns Don’t

Worry Sewell

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 17 (U. P.).— The St. Louis Browns, help or no help, are determined to be a sea-son-long threat to the New York Yankees, or any other American league clubs with pennant ambitions next: year, if there is a next year in baseball. That’s on the authority of Luke Sewell, Alabama-born manager of the Browns, who came to St. Louis from Cleveland in mid-season last year and lifted a team that tied for sixth place in 1941 into third place in 1942. “We're open,” Luke said today. He meant the Browns had money to spend and intended to buy any player they could find to help their team. “But I can't see much help for us. A lot of the players are going into military service and those that aren’t just aren't for sale.” Luke wasn’t worried about his Browns. He gave full credit to every member of the squad.

Wants to Win Pennant

“Nobody played over their heads for me. The team just had team spirit and everybody did the best they could. And we came through all right. “But we can’t look for next year. The thing to do is win this war. After the war—well, then baseball will be here and the Browns will be in it. Personally I'd like to win a pennant with the Browns, but before anything else I want to win the war. I'd like to be in service— and I may be.” Luke didn’t offer any excuses why he wasn’t in military service. None was needed. He is married, 40 years old and the father of two daughters and so far exempt from the draft call. Luke plans to be back with the Browns next year. His contract expires in December but there was no

620 question but. what it would be re-

newed, possibly for a long period.

620 a19 | His relations with the club have

been more than pleasant and with reason for Don Barnes, the president, is convinced that Sewell is solely responsible for the upsurge in the Browns. s
