- King Sisters Pay off
GUESS I have to take it all back. .She is not puday.. I mean 8, the youngest, blondest and gayest of the King Sisters who are ently entertaining on the stage of the Circle theater this week. Last Saturday, after they opened with Alvino Rey and his band, uise, the eldest sister, told Yvonne that she had been called “fat
that: she had added “fat” beC8 well, she was a little bit
Anyway, Yvonne stood up for po. Pudgy, she said, she
claimed Yvonne from her end of the table, “that one of the newspapers herp said I was quote, fat and pudgy, unquote?” ~ Everybody laughed and I man‘aged to cackle guiltily, becduse it was obvious then that she was neither fat nor pudgy. I felt called upon to say something so I said how could anyone say such a thing
Louise, who was sitting at the head of the table with her husband, Mr. Rey, grinned down at
“Watch your expressions, girls,” she counseled. “That man is here.” “They looked at me and that moment .I gracefully dropped a juicy mushroom on my clean, ‘white shirt, which I had put on especially to have dinner with the
It served me right.

taking over some of the business managing functions. Donna, the unmarried sister, and: Yvonne, who is married to the pianist in the band, handle publicity. Louise * helps Alvino worry about finances, which probably explains why Louise looked concerned after the first shaw last Friday. Frankly, I don't think they have anything to worry about, but that's their business. For a very special reason, Alice, the fourth sister, doesn’t do much but sing. She is my favorite King sister for. this same reason which I am not allowed to divulge. She, too, is married, her husband serving in the army. All of the sisters frankly like Indianapolis. Alice said the people she has met here remind her more of the folks back home in the west than anyone she’s met in this part, of the country. The King sisters come from Utah and points west. They are four of the five daughters of King Driggs, a music teacher, and they are the descendents of the Mormon pioneers who trekked from Illinois with Brigham Young to found Salt e City. Ed 2 = ~ THERE ARE five King sisters altogether, and two brothers, all of then musical. At home as youngsters, they had an orchestra led by their father. The sister who is not with the quartet now is married and living out on the coast. She retired from showbusiness when pudgy, I mean Yvonne, got old enough to sing with the girls. The King Driggs family has lived all over the west. Louise and Alice were born in Payson, Utah, Donna in Sanford, Colo., and Yvonne in Ephraim, Utah." They all say there isn't 4 state as good as Utah in the country. Louise met Alvino Rey when both. were employed by Horace Heidt. She was singing, he was playing the guitar. They were married in 1937. The girls began to click with Heidt and later on with the Al Pearce and Artie Shaw radio shows. They have de several pictures. ® But before they got anywhere, they did their share of scrimping, saving and borrowing each others’ clothes. They are all about middle size, except Yvonne, who, stands slightly over five feet in high heels. Now that they've hit the top, they're working harder than ever. They've made enough money to buy a ranch for papa and mama Driggs in California. You ‘might: wonder whether these girls, who have the most imitated style in the business, have the glamor complex which so many people in show business affect. They don't. Having dinner with them, like listening to them. sing, is worth a clean shirt any day.

here today. The divorce was filed only nine months after Rooney and Miss Gardner, herself a film starlet, slipped away to Santa Barbara and were married in the little town of Ballard, Cal. The screen’s “Andy Hardy” and his wife separated 10 days ago and at that time Miss Gardner explained that it was just a case of not being happy together., During their brief marriage, she claimed in her complaint, they accumulated some $200,000 in community property and she sought a share of alimony from Rooney's estimated salary of $5000 a week. In seeking the alimony, the actress said she was without means of paying for her suit or to support herself in her accustomed manner of living. The 21-year-old screen star was not available for comment. Miss Gardner’s suit did not elaborate upon the “grievous mental suffering and extreme cruelty” inflicted upon her by Rooney.
