CLEVELAND, Sept. 16. (U.P.).—

Jimmy Bivins, Cleveland, cut the Probable odds for his return bout (Vith New York's Bob Pastor on Oct. 8 to even money when he registered a surprise, 10-round decision over Tami Mauriello of New York at Cleveland arena last night. A crowd of 11,000 fans watched

Bivens take the bout by a slight margin. The Clevelander opened the bout with a savage flurry of rights to his opponent's jaw and Scored the contest’s only knockdown early in the first round. Mauriello recovered fast, however,

and, at the bell, landed a hard right cross to Bivins’ jaw. After .the opening round burst, both fought a more cautious fight, until the 10th round. Then both came out striving for a knockout, but the final round was about even. The United Press score card gave Bivins four rounds. Mauriello took the, third and eighth and four were even, A low blow cost Mauriello the fifth. Bivins weighed 177; Mauriello, 180. Pastor and Bivins are scheduled to meet Oct. 8. In their previous

meeting the New Yorker won the decision.

While the emphasis in practice has been on tightening the defense, Stuhldreher also has overhauled the offensive. Reds Buy Catcher From Sacramento

CINCINNATI, Sept. 16 (U. P.).— Ray Coleman Mueller, praised by scouts for the Cincinnati. Reds as “the best catcher in the Pacific Coast league this year,” today became a member of the Cincinnati club. Red Manager Bill. McKechnie announced that Mueller had been from the Sacramento (Cal) Solons for a “substantial” amount of cash and the services of one player, to be named later. Mueller, who is 30-years-old and married, was believed to have been acquired to take over the Red’s No. 1 catching post in the event Ray Lamanno is called into the army

port. And he is ready for competition with any of the carefully nure tured big-name welterweights of the East—Ray Robinson, Fritzie Zivic, Marty Servo, Freddie Archer, ete. Hence the somewhat frantic negotiations of Jacobs’ 20th Century club to find a “policeman”—a tough welterweight slugger—who' may belt Wilson back to his Mitchell field barracks. Jacobs has assured Wilson’s manager, Walt Melrose, that Wilson will fight on the Louis-Conn card at Yankee stadium, Oct. 12.

Money Is: No Object

Matchmaker Nat Rodgers of the 20th Century has free rein in selectiling an opponent for a fighter who never before has appeared in the East. But the managers of topflight welters are shunning him as if he had smallpox. Jackie Wilson (not to be confused with the featherweight title claimant, Jackie Wilson of Pittsburgh), would have come East long ago were it not for the virtual embargo on his fists. He's a Negro welterweight, and an exceptionally good one, with 37 knockouts in 51 pro bouts. But the. 20th Century had one great Negro welterweight in Henry Armstrong and then another in young Ray Robinson. So—Jackie Wilson stayed in California until his uniform brought him to Mitchell field, raring to go. Money is no abject to 24-year-old Wilson or his independently wealthy manager. They demand satisfaction and it appears they will get it, because Wilson of the army will be fighting for nothing—no matter, whom he meets. Under such circumstances, he can demand at least, a top-flight Eastern opponent. A
