LONDON, Sept. 12 (U. P.) —Sir Stafford Cripps, government leader, announced in commons yesterday that the British armed forces were being given a 20 per cent increase in basic pay. : The increase will cost 43,000,000 pounds ($172,000,000) per year he said. a “These increases,” he said, “do not pretend to be lavish or spectacular or comparable to the pay of the American armed forces or highly paid industrial workers but will enable the normal soldier or ‘officer to keep himself and his family in reas sonable comfort and health having regard to the ordinary commodity resources of the country as a whole.” The new base pay of lowest ranking troops will be 21 shillings ($4.20) per week, compared with 17 Shillings ($3.40) previously. The new pay is approximately one-third that of the American private on overseas duty.
