Then he dashed up the stairs to Mr. Bakers. office, I “after. him. . » » ® “Cops and Robbers . WHEN WE reached the top, 1 managed’ to ascertain that he was »not only the record man, he was the Victor record man, and he was very anxious to see Mr. Rey.

At the rear of: Mr. Baker's office, {here is a passage to the backstage stairs and I. slipped-through that ‘without - eliciting ' anything more than a raised eyebrow from Mr.. Victor Records who was not authorized to let me backstage because. he didn't work there, he was sorry. : 1 began to have the pleasant; reminiscent feeling of playing cops and robbers as I started into a girl's dressing room and zoomed out again in high gear. All I wanted was to find out how the sonovox worked and that was becoming a major problem. Anyway, . my curiosity was strictly scientific. - Downstairs, I ran into a knot of boys in the band who were making hotel reservations and couldn't be disturbed. ‘At length there ap- . peared one friendly, familiar, authorized face and he told me Mr. ‘Rey was on stage behind the screen talking to somebody. I crept on stage and there were two gents holding an earnest conversation which stopped as I approached, but neither gent was Mr. Rey, so I departed and immediately the conversation resumed. Finally, it developed that Mr. Rey was in his dressing room dnd-it looked as though I had won the battle. ; F

She Sings, Too HE TOLD me that wires from the electric guitar run backstage to special clamps which are fitted on the throat of Louise, one of -the King sisters, the tall one. She talks without using her vocal cords into a microphone behind the curtain. - By some combination of electrophysics, grids, filaments, wires and whatnot, the strings of the steel guitar, played by Mr. Rey on stage, become her vocal cords backstage and the result is preity weird. I couldn’t help thinking how simple

which she can do right enough. Pretty sqon, the door burst open and I thought for a minute it was Mr. Victor Records afier me, but it turned out to be the tall King sister who looked worried about something. There seemed to be a lot of breathlessness around the place. The tall King sister left hurriedly -without saying anything and then Mr. Rey indicated that he had to see someone about something, so we started out on the stage. There was Mr. Baker with Mr. Victor Records in tow. : I thought I caught a fleeting expression of disapproval on the face of the Unauthorized One, but maybe it was my imagination, Anyway, there we were, all standing around. This lasted a second until Mr. Baker started to introduce: Mr: Victor Records to someone. See A Rush of Feet | THERE WAS a rush of feet and I couldn't catch who it was the

troduced to, for he was rushing upon Mr. Rey and pumping his hand like a long, lost brother. ‘Everybody seemed to be shaking hands at the moment, so Herb Kinney of The News who hap-

pened to be standing: there, too, turned to me and we shook hands
