As for the efforts of the Hindu Mahasabha to find a way out of the Indian impasse through an exchange of views with prominent members of the principal political}

parties, one beneficial result has al-

eady been the considerable clari-| fication of the issues at stake. That the talks will accomplish more than this is doubtful. The Mahasabha is demanding a British ‘declaration of India’s independence and establishment of & provisional, all-party, wartime government committee to fullest. support of the allied war effort, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, working president of the Mahasab-| ha, presented his plan to ‘the viceLord Linlithgow It is most unlikely that Mookerjee will receive any encouragement from: the British unless he is able to present a powerful coalition of Hindu and Moslem elements.

Pakistan Is Barrier ~~ :

The fact that Mookerjee has succeeded in inducing two prominent Moslems, Sir Sikander Hyat Khan, premier of Punjab, and Khan Allah Bahadur Bakdsh, premier of Sind, to come to New Delhi for informal talks is a step forward. ‘However, no agresment with thef vs would have any meaning! J t was approved by M. Aly Jha, president of the Moslem | league, who is now in Bombay. ‘Doubtiess Mookerjee hopes| through the influential Sikander to ‘bring Jinnah around. It is almost a hopeless prospect as long as the issue of Pakistan—the ‘Moslem, plan for division of India into Moslem and Hindu nations—stands between them. Mookerjee and his Mahasab-| ha«are dead set against Pakistan, but are willing to shelve the issue | until after the war if the Moslems will join a provisional all-party gov‘ernment for the ‘duration. Jinnah is willing’ to participate in a wartime provisional government “only if the Moslems guaranteed Pakistan after the war should they vote in favor-of it. 3
