“Wong Fry's Taste in Fumishings
Runs to the Simple and Sturdy 1
IF JUNIOR OR SIS were intrusted with the decoration of —_— own rooms, the job of” housekeeping would be a great deal simplified for
mother,
Their tastes. according to a survey recently made by a bedspread
manufacturer, run to simple and sturdy furnishings. The survey revealed that college freshmen,’ charged. for the first
time with the task of decorating their rooms, averaged $108 for furnishings. The 3721 students interviewed provided a list of the things they ‘considered basic ,essentials—a list that probably. would be duplicated by their younger sisters and brothers. It included sturdy bedspreads; use ually of the woven type with matching draperies; at least four sheels and pillow cases, one to three blankets; six each of bath and hand towels and wash cloths, and two bath mats. Other items were a pen and pencil set, two laundry bags, a good study lamp, a flashlight, an Siar ‘clock, decorative pillows and scatter rugs. Extras they mentioned were hostess equipment such as percolators, grills, cloths and napkins; at least one good picture, and easy chair and footstool,” hassocks, sewing kits, extra mirrors, cork bulletin boards, - folding screens, phonographs or radios, book ends and magazine racks. And none of the items they wanted was of the “fussy” type. A break for mother, who probably still has the cleaning job, no matter who ' selects the furniture.

DEAR JANE JORDAN-I am a married woman and have four lovely children but I am very unhappy.
‘tI have been married 18 years. My
husband drinks. He goes out and
.|stays until two o'clock, sometimes all
night. He never wants me to go
‘{any place. I moved to Indianapolis
and have started to take first aid but he raved until I think I will quit. « I go with my sister and little girl. Sometimes when he is away I take the children and go to the show, and he doesn’t like that. When he drinks he is so cross that there is!
nothing he doesn’t call me. I love]
my husband but sometimes I feel as if I just can’t stand his abuse any longer. I have left him before, but I have my children and my. home and I really don’t’ know what to do. My people think it is’ awful the way he treats me, but he keeps up our home and buys us clothes. I would ‘love to have a few kind words once in a while. He wouldn’t stand for my doing the. things he
out ‘and stay out but I can’t for I wouldn't leave my children. What wou, be your suggestion? A MOTHER. . 2 2
band can be cured of drinking. I don’t know of any ‘way ‘he can be cured until he is tired ‘of the results and wants to quit. What you are trying to discover is a technique of living as peaceably as possible with a man who drinks. . You have discovered for yourself that threats accomplish nothing and you know that you have no intention of carrying out your own threats because you can't. My impression is that ‘the last thing you should do is to give up your first aid course or any other
in a useful manner and teaches you
1a technique of any sort. Your hus{band’s objection may be based on|.
the fact that your children are left In this case make better arrangements for their care ‘and go/ on with your work. Why does he have to know how you spend your time if he is away from home so much, unless you tell him in order to reproach him for leaving you alone? Can't you just quietly go your way and take your children to the show and say noth-
ing? BR ~ Upon the occasions when he does! ‘| discover how you have spent your
time you must show less fear and
| more determination. This is no
time for you to recite his faults and
