Takes Charge At Ft. Knox

LOUISVILLE, Ky. Sept. 8 (U. P.) —Joe Bach, a 200-pound Minnesotan remembered best as the human mountain who did the tackling for Notre Dame’s Four Horsemen, arrived here yesterday to take charge of Ft. Knox's armored football raiders. “You can quote me as saying,” Bach said as he squinted first at the fort football schedule and then at the gold vault, “This is me

golden opportunity.” Bach refused to crystal gaze his

" prospects or make any promises in regards to the Knox opener only|

three weeks hence against Ohio State, Meet ‘Big Teams’

“We may not win any games, but

‘tt won’t be because we didn’t meet

any big teams,” he announced. By “big teams” newsmen assumed Bach referred to Indiana, Iewa State Cadets, Camp Grant, Ill, or possibly Ohio State. Bach said he planned to use the Notre Dame system built on the 1 formation, shifting into a single wing, short punt and spread formation from a balanced line. The new tutor of the Tankmen, as F't. Knox has announced its team will be known, bobbed into the picture when Harry Mehre of Mississippi failed to obtain his commisgion. Bach served as coach at Niagara university until the school abandoned football. Succeeded Layden He also served as line coach at

Syracuse four years, Duquesne four years and Carnegie Tech one year.

- He succeeded Elmer Layden as head

t

coach at Duquesne in 1934, giving up the post a year later to become coach of the professional Pittsburgh - Pirates. Bach said he received an offer from Stanford university shortly after he accepted the Ft. Knox post.

Rain Puts Damper

On Tennis Finals

Rain put a damper on the finals of the state tennis tournament at Meridian Hills country club yesterday afternoon after one set of the finals in the men’s singles had been played. William Lurie, Kokomo, had a 7-5 edge over Roger Downs when the downpour put a halt to play. They owill resume their match on the same courts next Sunday at 2 p. m.

‘The mixed doubles will be played

at 3:30 p. m. the same day between Downs and Ann Atkins and Florence Wolff and Dan Morse. The men’s doubles championship tilt has been postponed indefinitely because Andy Bicket, one of the contestants, is slated to report to the Great Lakes naval training station today. Bicket and Frank O'Connell were to oppose Downs and Raymond Von Spreckelson in the match.

ministered a defeat to the highly regarded Alsab and a field of seven other starters. Alsab has gained wide acclaim as one of the greatest bargains in racing history, but the little colt purchased for $700 as a yearling by Albert Sabbath, Chicago attorney, couldn't match strides yesterday with Marriage, which came up from the ranks of $1000 ers. The astute Hirsch Jacobs gained Marriage early in its racing career for $1000 and the lost the campaigner last fall in a $5000 claiming event to' the California stable of H. A. Howard and Guy Dupuy.

the far-western turf men, Marriage has been started chiefly in the lower grade handicaps and allowances. Eighteen triumphs in the last two seasons had netted him an aggregate of only $60,220. Marriage was entered in yesterday’s handicap on a long-shot gamble and came through in conclusive fashion to outstay Alsab in a brilliant stretch duel and win by a length. Marriage, kept reasonably close to the pace through the early running, responded gamely when Jockey Charley Corbett called upon him at the top of the stretch in the mile and a quarter journey. An eighth of a mile from the finish wire, Marriage finally pulled ahead of the pace-setting Thumbs Up and then withstood Alsab’s last desperate challenge to take the winner’s share of $25,200. Marriage returned its backers $14.80 to win, $480 to place and $3.20 show. The winner carried 114 pounds and was timed in 2:02 2-5. Alsab’s defeat was blamed in many quarters on the ride he was given by the veteran Alfred Roberfson. when the field passed the clubhouse for the first time, All through the back stretch he raced wide and then lost additional ground on the turn into the stretch. Throughout the last quarter Robertson plied the whip. The colt responded gamely to overtake all but Marriage. Robertson rode Alsab in a race for the first time yesterday. Alsab went to the post the solidly backed four-to-five favorite. He returned $3.00 to place and $2.60 to show. Thumbs Up, which shared the

‘Cinderella Horse' Receives Attention of Racing World

By TOMMY DEVINE United Press Staff Correspondent

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 (U. P.).—A new “Cinderella horse” won attention

It was Marriage, a 6-year-old chestnut gelding that stunned a holi-|g day crowd of 35,000 fans yesterday by winning the $25,000 added Washington park handicap in one of the season's turf upsets. ‘As Marriage, & rejuvenated plater won its first major stake, it ad-

early pace-setting role with With Regards, finished; third and paid $3.20. Back of the three leaders the field trailed in this order: AntiClimax, With Regards, Daily Trouble, Alstern, No Competition and General Manager.
