Correct Use of the Refrigerator
Will Make It Last for the Duration
MOST OF THE MECHANICAL household equipment ‘in use will ‘have to last through the war since factories are now producing defense
materials rather than refrigerators and stoves. Used correctly and
‘kept in good condition, these housewives’ aids will last beyond ‘the,
‘duration. -
Here are some suggestions for bringing a refrigerator to a ripe old
age. Place it out of the sun and not too near a range, on level and solid footing. Allow two and a half inches leeway at the back and from 10 to 12 inches above for good circulation of air. Don't open the door oftener than necessary and close it promptly.
Cool foods to room temperature before placing them in the refrig-| | Spilled foods should be|i
erator. wiped up Immediately because acids may affect the glaze of the re{rigerator lining. Slnoe grease will damage the
rubber gasket on the door, wipe. foods or grease off quickly. Avoid |: grasping the gasket in opening the| door.
- IN MECHANICAL refrigerators, the sold control should be set to maintain ‘a temperature of about 40 degrees. The control ‘should be ‘returned to. normal position promptly after quick freezing and ice cubes should be frozen only as needed. Defrosting should be done weekly or. before ice on the unit is onefourth inch thick. During defrosting, the refrigerator should be
' washed thoroughly—with a solu-
tion of ane teaspoon of baking soda in one quart of warm water for the interior; warm suds for the outside. If the family leaves for a short trip, the temperature control should be turned to the warmest position. This will keep foods fresh if the door is not opened. For longer absences, the refrigerator should be defrosted, the ice, trays emptied, the box cleaned thoroughly and the door left open. . . . And don’t forget to turn off the electricity or gas.

A War Job To Perform
By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Writer MANY PATRIOTIC school teachers ‘are becoming restless and dissatisfied with their jobs, and looking for more “constructive” ' war work. many national leaders, those who are doing a good job of teaching youth are as important to the nation as are the soldiers fighting in the front lines.” In Great Britain hig Jesson was learned the hard way. Only after an alarming increase in juvenile
eral decline in adolescent morale, did leaders realize the hann done by weakening their educational and recreational institutions. The morale of a school-age child depends almost entirely on the example set for him every day by
a particularly. destructive effect on the teen-age child, but there are many ways in which a sane, wellbalanced teacher can counteract this. ‘ : The idealistic adolescent is patriotic by nature. have patriotism forced on him. In particular, he is keenly sensitive to the hypocrisy of sueh statements as, “It is your patriotic duty to study hard,” or “Mow the lawn” or whatever else we ‘happen to want done. o » o HE WANTS a real explanation of war—what caused it, what part he can take in it, what hope there is in working toward the abolishment of future wars. Otherwise he will naturally conclude that mass killing and cynical disregard of human suffering is the natural way of life. A confused, defeatist teacher can do irreparable damage to the groping, hopeful adolescent. An attitude of “We'll always have war, so long as as we have human nature” can destroy a child’s faith in life, He wants to hear what is being done to rebuild a better society, in which war will be unnecessary because everybody has his human share of the world’s goods. He wants to hear about. the magnificent dream of the future which has enabled the ordinary people of China and Russia, for instance, to fight almost single-handed against overwhelming odds.
