‘In the first scene, we find Mr. Gable, a foreign correspondent

Ust back from the troubled international situation, trying to persuade his boss that the Japs are preparing to attack. The won't listen, so Mr. Gable tes ‘the boss’ clothes away from * him; tosses: them out of the win- - dow and has the Story published ‘anyway. Just like real life! In the second scene, we find Lana Turner, who also is a cor- | respondent of parts, taking a bath . to get dressed so she can go out . &and_cover a fire. Into the room i Tushes Mr. Gable. It used to be i his room and he doesn’t like the i-ddea of anyone living there during the three years he has been cor- ! responding,

{ Miss Turner hastily drapes her-

iself in a bath robe and rushes "nto Mr. Gables arms. Even Mr. f Gable is surprised. Of course, { neither Le nor the audience re- { member that he broke a date with her three years before and _ that she has been ‘pining for him - “secretly ever since. ® 2-8

where they have repaired to eat some borscht. In the fourth scene, ditto, only he leaves her because the editor, apparently tickled at the way she didn’t cover that fire, is sending her to Indo-China where the regular correspondent is drunk. Naturally, she gets lost and Mr. Gable and his brother follow her. Mr. Gable finds her and . they kiss in Tndo-Glsing.

The Ending Is Good

SOMETIME LATER, I open my eyes and there they .are, in each other’s arms, only this time it is in a hotel at Manila and the camera slips away from the love scene for a brief moment to show a calendar which says Dec. 7. Toward the last, they are in. Bataan, helping out. Several members of the cast, including the brother who is in love with Lana, too, have been disposed of by the enemy, but the two principals are still together, poised for their last kiss, when... . but I won't tell. Anyway, the ending is worth seeing because in the last scene, Gable speaks the only lines in the show worth listening to. ® # 8 ALSO ON the bill is a remark-

able cartoon, “Blitz Wolf,” which

is much superior cinema. 8 2 ad Happy Holiday AS A MUSICAL, “Holiday Inn,”

which opened at the Indiana yesterday, is solid. It: couldn't help

as Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Paramount added Marjorie Reynolds, who used to ‘decorate many a B film, and she certainly makes the boys happy. Mr. Astaire has had more skilful partners, but Miss Reynolds has a particular charm which adds a nice flavor to the musical. Fact is, Mr. Astaire has two dance partners this trip. Virginia

“Dale is the other and she’s ex-

ceedingly capable. His outstanding routine, a dance done amid the explosions of firecrackers, he does alone, however. When the going gets complicated, there are few who can keep up with Astaire. Mr. Crosby sings in his usual manner, which is pleasant. His comedy savoir-faire is tops. The music by Irving Berlin is fine, especially “Be Careful, It's My Heart,” “Happy Holiday” and “White Christmas.”

» E 4 » X Young Ladies Giggle HALFWAY THROUGH the picture, I became painfully aware of two young ladies who kept giggling. Then I noticed a young fellow nearby who was sleeping ostentatiously, head thrown back, dead to the world. So I woke him up. I told him apologetically that if it hadn't been a. good picture, I would have let him sleep. He said he hadn’t got to bed after finishing work at 8 a. m., and

where he could sleep free, and come back another time. ; The ladies stopped giggling, but started talking, which was worse. Even so, I got a kick out of “Holiday Inn,” so I guess it must be pretty good. Funny thing, though. The legislature has been meeting all these years and passing bushels of laws and no one ever introduced a bill hushing women in movie houses on pain of a $1,000,000,000,000,000 fine. Guess they don't dare, but I'd be satisfied if they reduced the penalty to only $1,000,000,000. Now I'll get it, x bet.
