ANDERSON, Ind., Sept.1 (U.P). —Little Archie Cnadd, who masterminded two schoolboy teams to Indiana basketball championships, said today he was “through with basketball . for the duration ‘and then some,” announcing that he had resigned his position as athletic director and coach to become superintendent of Anderson, Ind. schools. ficials announced that Vern Shinn, former Ball State college backfieid star and former Elwood high school grid coach, already had been handed the reigns as football tutor, one of a half dozen titles which Chadd claimed as director of the athletic department,

Although Chadd indicated He would remove himself ' officially from the athletic department, it appeared that his new-found position would afford him an opportunity to maintain an active interest in the school's sports. Chadd, a native of Bainbridge, Ind, attended Butler university and served as a member of the Butler freshman coaching staff following his graduation there in 1928. From 1929 to 1932, he coached at Canton, Ill. For the past nine years, Chadd has served as coach

Collegians Lose To Eagles, 16-8

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 1 (U. P.). —Tommy Thompson and. Bob Priestly, combining excellent passing and receiving, led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 16-8 victory over Bob Zuppke’s college all-stars before 75,000 spectators last night. Almost 10,000 service men were among the throng that watched the Thompson-to-Priestly combination click for the first score midway in the second period. After the officials had ruled interference on the 32 on an earlier attempt, Thompson rifled one over the goal line. Priestley made ‘a spectacular one-hand catch with two all-stars hanging on his back. In the fourth, Thompson, who gained 154 yards with his tosses, spiraled the second touchdown aerial to Priestley from the 18-yard line, . The Eagles gained 162 yards by rushing compared to 69 for the all-stars. The collegians enjoyed a brief lead when Alf Bauman, Northwestern tackle, blocked Len Barnum’s kick on ‘the 12-yard line, the ball rolling over a safety which made the score 8-6.

Purdue Home Tilts Will Start Later

LAFAYETTE, Ind. Sept. 1 (U. P.) —Purdue football fans required to travel in order to attend RossAde stadium games were scheduled to get a break today with Athletic Director Guy (Red) Mackey’s announcement that home games will start one-half hour later than usual. Purdue’s first three home games with Fordham, Wisconsin and Great Lakes will all start at 2:30 p. m, CWT, while the Indiana game has been set for 2 p. m.

Paige Strikes Out Nine in 3 Innings

The Kansas City Monarchs squeezed out a 7-6 verdict over the Cincinnati Buckeyes at Victory field last night as 4500 fans watched “Satchel” Paige register nine strikeouts in three innings. Herman (Lefty) Watts, former Indianapolis hurler, gave the Monarchs only five hits but the Kansas City team turned them into five runs. The ‘Buckeyes made five runs in the ninth to tie the score by Kansas City won the game in the last part of the inning.

' CLEVELAND, Sept. 1 (U. P.)— Ft. Wayne Zollner Machines nosed out the Newport (Ky.) Sixth Ward Boosters, 2-1, to capture the Central regional men’s softball title before 2500 fans. The Indiana outfit played steady, tight ball behind Murray's threehit pitching and staved off a lastinning rally to win. Ft. Ax to Fall on Hitler's Head ~ NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (U. P)—

The heads of “Mussolini,” “Hit-

ler” and “Hirohito” will -roll from the chopping block on Oct. 15 at the factory of. the Miller Co. in Meriden, Conn. climaxing an employee drive to gather 1,250,000 pounds of scrap metal. According to an announcement by the American industries salvage committee, the scene depicting the coming “executions” is being used to stimulate the drive for scrap, and when the goal is reached the axes will drop and do their job. The company’s “war on waste” drive got under way in May. So well did the employees do their part that by Aug. 15 there had been gathered 801,299 pounds of scrap. Oct. 15 is now estimated as the probable date on which the 1,250,000-pound will be reached.

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (U. P.), — Anthony Cramer, 42, a former house painter, was indicted yesterday for

treason as an aid to two of eight saboteurs who landed in the United

The indictment alleged that Cramer, ‘German-born but a naturalized citizen, aided Warner Thiel and Edward J. Kerling, who landed at Ponte Vedra, Fla. and have since been executed. At his arraignment before federal Judge John C. Knox, Cramer protested that he should not be indicted for treason, which carries a possible deat penalty. “An old friend came to see. me and I met him,” he said. Cramer was born in Germany Oct. §, 1900 and came to the United States in 1925. ‘He returned to Germany in 1936, came back to the

Genuine Soldiers Star in War Film for First Time

VICTORIA, B. C., Sept. 1 (U.P.). —Lester Cowan, one of Hollywood’s most imaginative producers, today - filmed final scenes of the first movie ever to use only genuine soldiers, sailors and fliers in the cast. Cowan's rivals wouldn’t have believed it possible, because who would think a commando could act? Cowan’s theory was just the opposite. : “How could you ever get a hundred extras to leap from invasion barges, charge up the beach in water waist deep, scale sheer cliffs and knock each other down with their guns?” he asked. g They do, too. The commandos include hardened veterans from England, here to train new ones; the Canadian Scottish regiments and the Rocky mountain rangers.
