Foutlight Serenade’.
THE TRICK about “Footlight Serenade” at the Indiana is that it doesn’t try to outdo itself. No extravaganza, it is keyed to homey, simple appeals. Betty Grable seldom appears in anything longer than a pair of dancing trunks and Messrs. Mature and Payne take their shirts off frequently. In between is a boodle of A-1 comedy, good dancing and songs ‘by Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger, to-wit: “I Hear the Birdies Sing,” “I'm Still Crazy for You,” “Are You Kidding Me?” and ‘I'll Be Marching to a Love Song.” They are first rate tunes. What's different about this musical is that it has a story that amounts to something, in addition to music and dancing that amount to something. Here we find Mr. Mature as the heavy-: weight champ, backing a show because he’s crazy about showgirls.
Miss Grable and Mr, Payne are in love, but broke. So she gets a job in the show, rises to stardom as impresario Mature develops a deep affection for her. This leads to complications as

them their opportunity to comniit double mayhem. Some pretiy good moments here. It appears to be the intent of 20th Century-Fox to build up the shapely Grable as a musical star,- and there is no objection from this corner. Even the advance agent for the film had a note of awe in his voice when he told me that she was “terrific.” That translates out as “pretty good.” s 8 ” THE SECOND feature is “Little Tokyo, U. S. A,” with Preston Foster and Brenda Joyce.
‘Jackass Mail’
EVER SINCE he played “Pancho Villa,” Wallace Beery has been appearing on the screen as a shiftless nobleman of nature, looking as though he just rolled out of a freight car after a long haul across desert country.
Inevitably, he carries a sixshooter and is tough in an easygoing, roustabout way, with a paternal affection for youngsters who try to reform him. This is the case with “Jackass Mail,” except for the appearance of Marjorie Main as sort of an overage frontier belle.
They erect a statue to Beery in the film, and they should, for he has done his best with what scraps M. G. M. provides him for a story which is good for nothing better than a picture like “Jackass Mail.” He's one of the finest character actors of the screen and it’s a shame to see him go to seed in mine-run films. 1 suspect the fact that Mr. Beery was around the lot and at liberty at the moment was the main reason for making this epic which has the flavor of cheap whisky on a hot night: His presence is certainly the only reason I can see for looking at it.

LOEW'S SECOND attraction is “Calling Dr. Gillespie,” with Lionel Barrymore alleviating human suffering minus his star pupil, Dr. Kildare, now working for Uncle Sam.

'This Is The Army’
THE NEW YORK musical comedy hjt of many a season, “This Is the Army,” chock full of brand new Irving Berlin tunes and cast of great talent, is due in Indianapolis . . . sometime this fall . . . according to dispatches reaching Ft. Harrison. When or where it will play here isn’t known yet, definitely. But it’s going to be a treat for Indianapolis and the army when it comes. Its Broadway run, which is breaking all attendance records, won't be over probably until mid-September and then it will take to the road.
Child Stars
The 'Old-Timers'. Are Trying For Comebacks.
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent
we feel 106 years old; we've just left some old-time movie stars, trying to make a comeback in the films. - / There was Baby Sandy, age four and one-half, working again onthe sound stages. Next year she goes to kindergarten. There was Bobby Brféen. Remember Bobby? Well, sir, he’s almost 17 now and that beautiful soprano voice is tenor, except when it’s baritone. . Then there was Sooky. You can’t forget him, Jackie Coogan’s. baby brother. Sooky now weighs 200 pounds. He's six feet tall and 17 years old and playing football. The old-timers of the “Our Gang” comedies were there, too; Alfalfa Sweitzer, who can cross his eyes at will; Spanky McFarland, as fat as ever and 14 now, and Cora Sue Collins, who was the beautiful blond child with the ribbon in her hair. Cora Sue’s still beautiful.
Support ‘Old Lady’
These veterans, with their talk about ‘the good old days in the movies, are functioning as supporting players to another old, old lady of the films, Miss Jane Withers. And don’t forget the “Miss.” The name of her picture is “Johnny Doughboy.” John Auer is director, while the astute Republic studios, manufacturing the only
empt from the draft, are the producers. So if you don’t mind well talk about some of the vets. Take Miss Withers, who was the little fat girl in so many Fox dramas. She's tall and beautiful now, and in a bathing suit (which she was) makes your eyes goggle. Miss Withers was in New York a few weeks back. J. J. Shubert offered her a musical show = on Broadway. She ‘said
