Ps Part of Goebbels’ Plan :
To Prevent Frénch Aid To 2d Front.
By WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS ° : Scripps-Howard Foreign Editor ‘WASHINGTON, Aug. 26.—First‘hand reports reaching Fighting French circle in this country re-|S veal that an unprecedented wave ‘of anti-American propaganda is chia " sweeping France, “especially the oc“cupied regions. The purpose is, firsty te offset the rising tide of resetftment against the invaders and, second, to lessen the’ danger of a French uprising timed to coinfide oS with creation of Mr. Simms 3 second front. Adolf Hitler's pat .on the back for Dieppe yesterday was patently designed to heighten the effect of this crusade. According to radio ‘Berlin, he has ordered the release) of all French war prisoners from ‘the Dieppe region “in appreciation of the attitude of the citizens of that area” during the big raid. Tries “Kindness” Now This marks a reversal of Nazi policy. Heretofore the French were supposed to walk a chalk regardless. There were no prizes for good behavior. There was death before a firing squad even for thes “innocent whenever something happened to displease the Germans. Pierre Laval thought he had achieved something extraordinary when he induced the Nazis to liberate one sick and half-starved French prisoner of war in exchange * for three skilled French workers needed in Germany. That Hitler ghould now releases all prisoners from Dieppe and vicinity, therefore, is regarded as proof of something ‘akin to panic in Berlin lest a second front be the signal for revolt. In addition to rewarding the Diep- ~~ pois for not helping their friends + ‘who came to liberate them, Hitler apparently has ordered Dr. Goeb- ~~ bels to leave no propaganda trick untried to make the French hate ‘the Americans and the British. The Story Is Confused + It now seems to be the turn of the Americans to be made the particular devil in the minds of the French people. The United States is pictured as a nation with the soul of ‘8 jackal, bent on robbing poor . France of the remnants of her em-| . pire. ~~ President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill are pictured as the stooges of Premier Stalin on the ope hand, and of capitalism on the her, all three being inspired by =
