he Solomons F or Transfers

GREAT LAKES, Ill, Ak 26 (U. P.)—Coach Paul D. (Tony) Hinkle tched the Japanese counterattack ‘in the Solomons and other naval war news today for indications of the caliber of the football squad

he'll have to begin practice with|

next Monday. Naval news may be a better weather vane for the former Butler university coach than even the Chicago Bears-All Stars game at Chicago Friday because transfers of players, who are navy men first and football players second, promise to be Hinkle’s chief problem. - He already has lost all-Americans Paul Christman of Missouri and Joe Kuharich of Notre Dame and Al Forte of the Chicago Bears via the transfer route.

Hinkle’s - prospective’ Great Lakes

squad, which will play a 12-game schedule including six matches with Big Nine teams, includes at present 11 men who will appear with the All-Stars at Soldiers field.

Open Against Michigan

Included in the potential squad, all of whom are company commanders who start the day with

120 recruits in their charge at 5:30

8. m., are: Bill Crawford, Texas Christian d; Bruce Smith and Bob Sweig- , Minnesota backs; Urban Odson and- Len Levy, Minnesota linemen; Jack Stephenson and Jim Daniel, Ohio State tackles; Pete Kmetovic and Ken Robesky, Stanford halfback and guard, respectively; Fred Preston, Nebraska end; Joe Boyle, \Creighten, Neb., end; Ralph Moller, Wisconsin end; and Bob Nelson, Bayler center. Great Lakes candidates from the ~ pro field include Carl Mulleneaux, Green Bay Packers end; Howard Hickey and Rudy Mucha, end and center of the Cleveland Rams; and Jim Barber, Washington Redskins tackle. Great Lakes will open its schedule Sept. 26 against Michigan at Ann Arbor. The non-Big Nine games. include Camp Grant, III, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Marquette, Notre Dame and the University of Missouri at St. Louis. The latter game will be played Oct. 31.

Tebbetts Did It

WASHINGTON, Aug. 26.—Buck Newsom credits Birdie Tebbetts with making him a real pitcher, claims the former Detroit Tiger backstop taught him to pace himself and mix up his pitches.
