VOICE from ——

by RICHARD LEWIS

o "The Magnif cent Ambersons'

THERE ARE FOLKS around town who will recall the thdianspoliz of Booth Tarkington's novel, “The Magnificent -Ambersons.”. Whether Orson Welles and his Mercury players have succeeded in re-creating the atmosphere of that Indianapolis in the screen version which opened

at the

‘controversy between -critics and disaffection between R-K-O and Mr. Welles. The critics can’t agree that it’s a great ¢inema. And Mr. Welles contends fhat the studio did not exploit hisefilm in the manner to -which he is accustomed. ° I have picked up sides in the reviewers’ tug-o’-war over the picture - and have placed my pounds on the side which claims it’s a milestone in the American cinema, ; For my part, it is as good a film as I ‘have ever seen. A decade from now I think it still will be mbdern. For it is as far ahead of today’s average studio product as talking pictures are ahead of the silents, For me, it projects on the screen that lovable novel very much ‘as I remember it. At least, it is apparent that Mr. Welles has strived to be faithful to the book. + He has attempted to duplicate its scenes in the most minute detail, complete to architecture of the . day, which was probably the worst in American history. ! In portions which he narrates, Mr. Welles has taken the words out of the book. And they fit the 4. screen beautifully. Whether he | placed the emphasis on plot and character delineation as Mr. Tark- ' ington would have had him do ' pemains for the novelist himself to say. So far, Mr. Tarkington has remained silent.

[ It's Tricky : AS A MOTION piture, I would rate “The Magnificent Amber- | sons” a classic job of reproducing one of the best novels of our cen=

- tury, Outstanding is the photography of Stanley Cortez who has a talent for making actors look like people. One of ‘the most striking scenes, however, is without actors. Tim Holt as George Amberson Minafer returns for a last look at the ancestral mansion which has fallen with the family fortune beneath the advancing juggernaut of the machine age. As he enters the door, the camera becomes Holt, traveling through the gloomy, empty, highceilinged , roomis. The audience sees the barren house as George 4 Sees it. A few critics resented this trick; fost thought it a masterstroke. There are bigger names in Hollywood than those in the cast, but I doubt if a better, more talented cast could be fcund. As the

\ arrogant, spoiled scion of the aristocratic Amberson-Minafers, Tim Holt, the former cowboy star, shows what a fine actor he is. Joseph Cotten as Eugene Morgan, Dolores Costello as Isabel Amberson Minafer and Anne Baxter “as Lucy Morgan give splendid performances. 4 Perhaps the outstanding acting job, though, is given by Agnes Moorehead as Fanny Minafer whose unrequited love for Eugene Morgan makes her distracted and neurotic; Her's is one of the outstanding jobs of the year. Ray Collins as Jack Amberson, Richard Bennett as Major Amberson and Donald Dillaway as Wilbur Minafer are thoroughly capable. I think thers is one grievance against this film which should be made. It’s the lack of clarity in identifying the minor characters. While the principal characters and plot lines are crystal ‘clear, ‘one is never sure of the minor characters until near the end— unless one is very familiar with the novel. Otherwise, through the devices of narration, photography, gossip — an economy of dialog, Mr,

‘A WORD about the setting. Either R-K-O doesn’t believe it was Indianapolis, or for: some reason didn’t want te publicize the féct. Of course, it is Indianapolis, as everyone around here knows. X The exact location of the house which served as Mr. Tarkington’s model for the Amberson mansion is not agreed upon in local circles, however. Some folks say it was a residence in Woodruff Place. But Donald Jameson, Mr, Tarkington’s nephew, says he is quite sure the house could not have

‘been ih Woodruff Place, although

his uncle might have had the statuary on the lawns of Woodruff homes in mind in describing the estate. Mr. Jameson says he thinks the model for the Amberson home is at 1305 N. Delaware st, now occupied by the Knights of Columbus. The book mentions that the National rd. nearby. As Anton: Scherrer, one of our town’s historians, says, this could only’ have been Washington st., which still is the National rd. ‘Although Woodruff is closer to Washington st. than 1305 N. Delaware st., this might not prove anything because the latter is not far away. So there you are and Mr. Tarkington has been in Majne all summer, so I couldn’t ask him. As to the characters, well, Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch, an old friend of Mr. Tarkington, says the novelist ‘always kept secret the identity of his characters. Anyway, there have been plenty of pictures ‘produced about New York, Chicago and San Francisco, and this is one about -Indianapolis. Is it the Indianapolis that did exist at the turn of the cen“tury? Are these its people? I don't know. All T know is that I liked this picture.
