Dieppe Proves Need of Di
Flying Fortresses Given Larger Role Over Erne
r By EDWARD W. BEATTIE § United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, Aug. 21—A detailed Study of the Dieppe raid in pre-
&
paration for more big-scale attacks
Although the _nine-hour :atfack constituted the hardest-hitting, most highly integrated land, sea and air operation ever attempted by the British, an analysis of the raid revealed that its success was limited, particularly in regard to allied losses : :
Dive-bombers which constitute ‘one of the chief offensive weapons of the Germans would have been highly effective against some German strong points along the six Dieppe beaches where the raiders landed, it was said. It was these strong points that accounted for a . large proportion of she : allied casualties. 3
3500 Killed, Says Vichy
{Officials at Vichy today said the Germans estimated the number of allied killed in the Dieppe raid at “about” .3500, in addition to 1800 prisoners of the Germans. This
estimate said that about 4000 of the
allied raiders re-embarked. An earlier Berlin estimate had béen that of 15,000 raiders, all but 10 per cent had returned to England.) ‘Observers pointed out. that parachutists dropped around German artillery batteries back from the beach could have taken the gun crews by surprise and could have seized control of bridges and junctions, preventing the enemy from fushing up reinforcements to the
261,000 Pounds of Bombs
Despite the deficiencies, however, @ll observers described the Dieppe raid as a worthwhile contribution to preparations for the ultimate offensive that will carry the war back to the continent. Official reports assessing the final * Pesults of the Dieppe raid showed that it was far more than a grand scale commando attack. As part of it the British fleet fired hundreds of shells into. key targets and planes in addition to providing a protective umbrella dropped 261,000 pounds of high explosive and fragmentation bombs to knock out enemy strong points and kill ground troops. The British still contended that
Canadian commandos gather atound a wounded camirade after their return to a southern British port following the raid on Dieppe and examine captured
pilots who say that the Junkets-87,] Germany's best dive-bomber, is slow and cumbersome and almost defenseless. However, it is acknowledgey that the new American dive-bombers are infinitely superior to the original Nazi Stukas. Some observers pointed out that the R. A. F. provided a blanket of fighters. over Dieppe strong enough to protect any sort of dive-bomber. United States army flying fortress raids on German occupied territory - meanwhile: emerged as a vitally important feature of the Dieppe raid and as a portent of new, early attacks on'the French invasion coast.
Amiens Attacked
Allied quarters, assessing. the role
of the giant B-17 Boeing bombers in the “second front rehearsal” attack on Dieppe, said they were the greatest threat to the Germans after the 1000-scale plane raids of the royal air force. Fortresses in a raid which was clearly a follow-up of the Dieppe operation and a hint at other, bigger combined operations, made a dev-

resses had shattered the railroad yards of three of the most important communications centers behind the French coast. With Dieppe, these objectives of the army air corps, undoubtedly a part of the major operation, covered an area extending 35 miles along the coast, and about 30' miles inland. First they had attacked Rouen, 33 miles inland from Dieppe. Then they had attacked Abbeville, 35 miles up the coast from Dieppe.

Yesterday they attacked Amiens, which is 25 miles inland from Abbeville, 60 miles northeast of Rouen and 55 miles east of Dieppe. Reports to United States air force and.R. A..F. headqus left little doubt that the rm yards at all three towns, the only
ones from which the Dieppe area}
could be quickly reinforced by rail, had been knocked out. In the entire three days of highaltitude precision bombing not a single fortress: had been lost.
