We, the Women— Fickle Girls Make Soldiers Turn Cynical

By RUTH MILLETT

IF THIS SOLDIER'S experience is typical it seems a lot of American girls are willing to do anything for Uncle Sam but wait for one of Here is

those sweetly| but firmly de- , livered missives ‘to the effect that ‘really my dear, ‘it has been nice, and I wouldn't ‘take ‘anything. for the r'e c ollection of our friendship, but , “Sure, we know how it is. Bpring is in the air. “Put the girl of our|sc dreams out with the boy with flat feet or 20-60 vision, and see how much thrill she gets from the next ‘letter she receives. Don't tell me. A BIT CYNICAL, that soldiers letter. . But maybe he has a right be. Twenty-five per cent is pretty steep—when you're venga ering broken romances. 2 But all. those girls didn't Jit their men just - because they are soldiers and the girls prefer to play it safe with young men whose feet are -flat. Even in. peacetime there are a lot of engagements that never reach marriage. The girl who in wartime will jJilt a soldier for a safer risk will in peacetime jilt a strug gling yourig man for one Whose future doesn’t look like as: ‘much: of a gamble. That ought to be “soihe_consola~ tion to the soldier and his buddies who are in the 25 per cent. Not only that, but had they mare ried their girls there would still be a chante they wouldn't keep them. About ope marriage in every five ends in jdivorce—without &hy help from war conditions, The trouble isn’t with being a soldier, The trouble is with neing. in love. risky, almost, as war.

NEW. YORK, Aug. 20.=To show the ingenuity with which man in every far-flung corner of the world has utilized materials at hand to make fabrics for warmth and adornment, the Museum of Costume Art Lin New York is exhibiting interesting ancient..and modern -developments in the textile field, including a group made from rayon yarns d designed to take cafe of ci needs in wartime. The modern group remains wholly within government. allotments. Little known fabrics of the 18th and 19th centuries, some of them from the famed collection of Prof. Ralph. Linton of Columbia university, show that. Just, as. present. day textile experts weave versatile, manmade rayon into a variety of weights and textures, so have peoples of the ‘Par East transformed their natural resources into materials suitable for garments.

Current Fabrics Shown |

Native grasses, palm and banana leaves, fishskin, bamboo, raffia, tapa and straw aré woven for burhus, saris, jackets, ‘trousers and robes. ‘The museum presents, for instance, dried grass made ‘into raincoats;

dioniay, all showing the marvelous dye effects obtained from the use of three or four vegetable dyes. * Although these ancient fabrics inspire modern textile specialists to further work with unusual materials, the chief interest of the exhibit lies in-the collection of current, obtain able fabrics-—crepes, blends of spun rayon and Wool, velvets and jerseys. Rayon crepés as displayed at the museum ave distinguished for their texture interest which, in line with the - conservation program, eliminates the need.for trim...
