U, S. BOMBERS

~ Best for. Our Purposes; He Says Commenting On

British Claims.

- BALTIMORE, Md. Aug. 20 (U. P.).—Glenn L. Martin, noted build-

¥ er of warplanes, said today that

* British four-engined bombers are

“good ships,” but that their American counterparts are “the most thoroughly and accurately SEioped

: in the world.”

The president of the Glenn L.

. Martin Co. was commenting on

British claims that their heavy

i bombers are superior to American four-engined craft for the specific

purpose of carrying out mass night bombing on German cities. The British assert that their new Lancaster, for example, is the biggest and fastest bomber in the world, capable of carrying eight tons of bombs at more than 300 miles an hour. “The Lancaster is a good airplane, no doubt,” Mr. Martin said. “I am glad the British have as good & plane as they have in the Lag-

_ caster.” He added, however, that the Brit-

Excel in Some Things

‘4“The. British Lancaster,” he said, “couldn't get out and do the things our own ships are doing. - We excel “the British in some other theaters.” "The - British comparisons were made between the Lancaster and other of ‘their -heavy bombers and this country’s Boeing flying forttresses and Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Mr. Martin primarily builds medium bombers, but also recently ' launched the experimental 70-ton flying boat Mars. He said he “wouldn't want to make any comparisons” as to bomb capacity, but added that the Amer-

rest of the planes in the squadron “The

‘. British would say they are over-

equipped, perhaps.” Mr. Martin said that British or-

‘ ganization and equipment were

“different from ours” as a “matter

of choice” because the missions en- .. visaged were different.

British planes may be superior - for British purposes, he said, but ~ American planes are unexcelled for
